A new online sexual health check for men has been launched for the first time today.
NHS Direct has said its new symptom checker is suitable for all males over the age of 12 and covers a variety of concerns and conditions.
The new site also covers sensitive topics which people may have trouble talking about, such as sexual assault or abuse and sexual dysfunction.
The NHS claims its new symptom checker works by asking the user a series of questions and depending on the information provided will suggest a number of options including: a visit to a GP, A&E or a sexual health clinic.
In some cases, a further assessment may be suggested, with a call back from an NHS Direct nurse advisor, for which the user can choose to remain anonymous.
Users of the new site can also be given advice enabling them to treat themselves at home. NHS Direct claims that in these cases, instructions are always given explaining what to do if the problem persists or worsens.
Commenting on the new site, Helen Young, NHS Direct clinical director and chief nurse, said: "Sexual health is unfortunately often a low priority for men and the subject can be viewed as embarrassing and uncomfortable to talk about. The new symptom checker encourages men to take the reins when it comes to their concerns and seek confidential advice.
"It's vitally important that anyone with a concern about their sexual health seeks advice at the earliest opportunity. Often problems can be dealt with easily if picked up early but the longer something is left the more chance there is of further complications."
The symptom checker has been launched in time for Men's Health Week, which NHS Direct is partnering, and will be available at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk from today.
