England fast bowler Ryan Sidebottom took four wickets on the second day of the first Test at Lord's as New Zealand were bowled out for 277.

Following wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum's heroics on the truncated and rain-interrupted first day, captain Daniel Vettori was the man who stepped forward for the tourists on day two.

Resuming on 208-6, the Black Caps skipper took the initiative with a patient and controlled innings of 48 before he was bowled when trying to leave alone an inswinger from Sidebottom.

Vettori was the last man out, following the dismissals of Jacob Oram (28), who was caught at slip by Andrew Strauss, and tail-enders Kyle Mills (ten) and Tim Southee (one) both clean bowled.

Play was broken up due to the poor light in north-west London, with the game still suffering from the overcast skies that marred the first day's play.

The players were forced to leave the field twice for bad light, but it was the second new ball, rather than the light, which seemed to do most damage to the New Zealand tail.

Sidebottom's solid bowling meant he bounced back from a poor first day by his own standards.

His figures of 0-50 from 18 overs were eclipsed by his efforts on the second day, when he returned an excellent record of 4-5 from 10.1 overs.

England's openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook faced five and a half overs, but also chose to take the light when offered by umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Bucknor with the score 15-0 shortly before tea.
