A British soldier has been killed while on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The soldier from 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment was killed as a result of an explosion in the Nad-e Ali area of Helmand province on Sunday.

His next of kin have been informed.

Paying tribute to the soldier, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said: "His dauntless courage and his sacrifice will not be forgotten."

The death is the first to be confirmed for 2010 and brings the total number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 246.

A separate explosion in the country on Sunday killed four American soldiers, US military officials have confirmed.
