Demolition work has commenced at London's Heathrow airport, kick-starting the renovation of Terminal 2 after 55 years in operation.

The hub's first terminal is set to be replaced by a £1 billion building, designed to cater to 20 million passengers a year.

Star Alliance airlines will be located in the new terminal, reducing connection times for flyers and providing a better service.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, said: "Heathrow is changing for the better, and there is much still to do. Our brand new Terminal 2 will offer a better service to airlines and millions of passengers."

Terminal 2 was originally designed to accommodate 1.2 million people annually, but regularly handled close to eight million in the last few years.

As one of the world's busiest international airports, London's Heathrow services 1,350 flights daily on around 90 airlines to more than 180 destinations.

In 1977, the London Underground link became the first direct connection with an airport globally.
