Go on a wonderful flight without ever leaving London.

The Venue
1707 Wine Bar is located in the basement of the revamped Fortnum and Mason - one of London's oldest and poshest stores. The central horseshoe-shaped bar offers seating consisting of high stools, leaving the perimeter of the bar free for tables and their accompanying chairs. Most of the tables are for six, so be prepared to share if they’re busy.

The lights - in particular - are fascinating, like large glass teardrops with the bulb visible inside. The walls are a rough-hewn wood and the ceiling is vaulted. There is an attractive and surprisingly light feel, given that you are in a basement.

The Atmosphere
There's a bit of everything here, from gay couples having intensely quiet chats to a priest in his collar relaxing over a bottle of white and the inevitable tourist element clutching their guidebooks. A guitarist plays in the background and it feels like you could be on vacation somewhere really chic. 1707 Wine Bar would be ideal for a date or to catch up with an old friend. The staff make sure you’re well looked after and really know their wine.

The Food
Finger food is served tapas style at 1707 Wine Bar with an appetisingly long list of nibbles that can be selected to complement certain wines (the staff are happy to advise on pairings).

The Drink
Wine takes centre stage at 1707 Wine Bar with a large number of very interesting fine wines on offer and many choices that don't appear on other wine lists, such as selected bottles from Portugal or white wines from Spain. They also feature wine flights - three glasses of wine (125ml) chosen to complement each other and educate your palate. The idea is to take you on a bit of a tasting trip. It's a fantastic concept for anyone wanting to learn more about wine, and the staff are happy to give you further information on the selection or to make recommendations.

If you don’t drink wine, there is the Cabinet of Cocktail Curiosities list that dives into the great legacy of Fortnum and Mason to come up with drinks of the past. How about a walk down Gin Lane? Many of the cocktails you will never have the opportunity to sample elsewhere.

The Last Word
1707 Wine Bar has to rate as one of London’s finest wine bars and a destination in its own right.
