The ViewLondon Review
A large venue, The Alexandra in Wimbledon offers several bars, including one on its delightful roof terrace. Plasma screens for large sporting events – especially popular during the Wimbledon tennis period – are also available for sports fans, keen not to miss a moment of the action whilst supping a pint. The VenueSituated on the corner of Wimbledon Hill Road and St Marks Place, The Alexandra is all that you might expect from a town pub and more. With two bars to the front and a separate wine bar towards the rear there’s plenty of space for you to grab a swift pint, avoiding much of the usual clamouring for the bar at peak times. The addition of an outdoor roof terrace complete with its own bar is a pleasant addition and a real selling point of this venue.
The main snug part of the bar is typically olde worlde with terracotta walls, busy carpet and dark wood. There’s definite scope towards catering for sports fans with a large screen complete with several plasma screens and a TV behind the bar. The light wooden floor and tasteful decor are very easy on the eye.
The AtmosphereThere is a definite difference in ambience depending on where you sit at The Alexandra. The front area is mainly made up of regulars, sitting with a paper or popping in for a swift half after work. During big sporting matches the areas around the screens will be populated with fans cheering on their team or, during Wimbledon season, favourite player. Wimbledon tournament coverage is shown for those not lucky enough to get courtside tickets. The more sophisticated wine bar attracts trendy Wimbledonites who live and work locally.
The FoodThe food menu at The Alexandra is varied with Light Bites starting from £4.50 - the Arbroath smokie fishcake with steamed spinach, poached egg and caper hollandaise is a recommended choice. All sandwiches are £4.50 with mains starting from £5.95 for a vegetable and mushroom lasagne with garlic bruschetta. All the daily specials are advertised on a board, with a nice choice of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes.
The DrinkWith plenty of beer, lager and cider both on tap and bottled, there is something to cater for most tastes. Lagers include Carling, Heineken, 1644, Leffe and Fosters and ale drinkers aren’t left our with a good selection of Youngs Ales among others. This isn’t really a place to visit for a trendy cocktail, however the eclectic choice of wines is impressive with bottles to please all palates.
The Last WordThe Alexandra is a place to suit all moods and tastes. For a quiet, cosy drink, watching the sporting action, or a more than pleasant dining experience, you will not be disappointed.
