The ViewLondon Review
A member of the Late Night London stable, Alibi lies a little off the beaten track, but is it worth tracking down? The VenueSituated some way from the West End, on the quaintly-named Shoe Lane, the location may sound twee but it’s actually in the middle of a hard-nosed business district a mere stones throw from Fleet Street. With its catchy moniker and trendy facade, Alibi has a superficial hipness somewhat out of step with its environment. Look deeper inside though and you may experience a strange sense of deja vu, with a dark oak decor alleviated by mirrorballs and retro floral designs. Alibi belongs to a gang of contemporary venues that look good but are content to safely imitate rather than risking their reputation by demonstrating individual flair.
The AtmosphereMirroring the smartly-tailored clientele pouring in from the surrounding offices, Alibi has a professional atmosphere, suitable for after-work drinks. The dancefloor is small and under-used, while the music is eclectic, veering from Eminem one moment to Snow Patrol the next. The DJ would be advised to settle on the chilled-out beats, which best suit the candlelit lounge feel.
The FoodBefitting the Late Night London ethos, the food on offer at Alibi provides remarkable value for money while the location makes it a great place for a working lunch. With the evening menu specialising in cheap and cheerful dishes such as beer battered cod, haute cuisine this isn’t, but it’s refreshing to be able to enjoy pub food at pub prices in a refined bar environment.
The DrinkAs above, the emphasis is on value over innovation. There is at least sufficient choice of the standard beers, wines, spirits and classic cocktails, as well as a more extensive champagne list for those above the rank of middle-manager, and up to 50% off happy hours for those below. The service is also worth noting – with a good length bar you’re unlikely to have to stand several people deep and the staff are friendly and efficient.
The Last WordWhile there’s nothing wrong with Alibi (as its dedicated local clientele would no doubt corroborate), there’s nothing really original about this bar. However, it does what it says on the tin and offers a reasonably priced night out.
