I live just up the road and was really looking forward to The Alice House opening as from the outside it seems like the kind of place I would go to for drinks after work, or to hang out reading the papers on Sunday with a roast.

I have never written a review on one of these sites before, but feel so incensed that I feel I should start. This place has all the makings of a really cool bar; great location, excellent decor and the potential client base is obviously a good one considering where it is. Unfortunately The Alice Hose just can't seem to get it right at all.

The first time I went was just for drinks and as there were no tables we stood at the bar. (We were going to go for food but apparently they didn't have a chef) We ordered 2 glasses of champagne and when it came to us completely flat we obviously sent it back. The bartender was clearly upset about this and told us it was fine, so we asked if he could recommend an alternative. He couldn't as 'it was only his second day'. I had a glass of wine instead.

The second time was for dinner with 4 of my friends and we were put on a table at the back. This was fine, although we waited for ages for a menu and eventually had to get up and ask them for one. And we got - one. For 5 people. After half an hour we got up again to order and were then told what they didn't have available.... so we had to re-order again..... and then the food didnt come for about 45 minutes. Within this time we had ordered a decent bottle of wine which was corked, so they replaced it with another which was completely cool, although it took a while to explain what 'corked' meant to the waitress! The food came (we all had steaks) and they were really tasty.

Today I went again and as it was a couple of months since the last time I was hoping that the problems we had had before were teething problems and would be remedied. Unfortunately I think it has gone downhill!

We had bloody mary's and they were great, although the last one th

although the last one that we ordered was completely undrinkable and when we sent it back the waitress explained that it was her colleague's 2nd day and didn't know how to make them. Kind of begs the question why he was making them in the first place with no supervision - and frankly - how hard can it be? Then we were told there was no fish available (I'm recently pescetarian) so I ordered the potato cake. Sorry guys, but honestly - this is the worst food I've had in London for as long as I can remember. It was essentially microwaved mashed potato with oil on top. It was so horrid I even contemplated eating my friend's incredibly dry 'spatchcock' (reheated) chicken, but settled on his overly cooked chips. My other friend's steak didn't look too bad - perhaps this is the only safe thing on the menu?

I really don't wanna sound like a complete doom mongerer, but unless some good management goes in and sorts out the training of the bar staff and employs someone who can actually cook without a microwave then I'm almost sure you won't get repeat customers. There are other restaurants and pubs within spitting distance that are in a completely different league but in the same price bracket and I think there is only so long before people realise you can't pull the wool over their eyes with fancy decor and (overpriced) japanese whiskies. I really hope this happens!
