The ViewLondon Review
Wouldn’t it be nice if every office block had a nightclub? Navigate your way into the basement of this commercial building and that’s exactly what you’ll find.
The Venue
You walk through a smart lobby of a modern skyscraper towards a lovely, large doorman guarding a velvet rope. You can barely hear the music which shows great sound insulation skills as you’re essentially in an office building. A heavy door leads you to a small, plush hall where you get your bags checked and then it’s down a massive staircase to the club itself. The large space is filled with people and the music is blaring. Walk straight ahead and you arrive at a sizeable bar area with tables and stools aplenty. Turn left and you get to the main dancing area. Disco balls hang above the Saturday Night Fever themed dance floor and you can relax in one of the many comfy booths. Behind a velvet curtain is yet another bar area (this place is big). This area is much more chilled out and is a good place to unwind and have an actual conversation.
The Atmosphere
The clientele are mostly City types out after-work. Lots of suits, pencil skirts and white shirts are on display, albeit with the top buttons undone. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves across the different rooms. The first one acts as a bar for after-work drinks - a bustling environment with loud music and a lot of mingling. In contrast, the disco room is designed specifically for a boogie. The colourful dance floor is actually rather spacious and, later on, everyone’s slightly tipsy so they’re not shy about busting a move or two. The third room is suited for drinks with clients and sure enough you see more ties and less drunk people.
The Music
There’s a good choice of music. Coming down the main stairs you’re greeted by a mix of chart hits so you can shake your hips to Rhianna or nod you head to Tinie Tempah. The disco room fittingly spins cheesy 70s and 80s music. You will get Abba and Tiffany but don’t even bother asking for Led Zeppelin or the Smiths. It’s all good fun though. Behind the velvet curtain there’s a slightly quieter sound system playing mellow house music.
The Drink
Happy hour – 4pm-7pm, Monday-Friday - is great fun as you can get two for one on most drinks and some of the cocktails even come in hollowed out melons! Do make sure you keep an eye on them as the staff are very quick to clear, especially around the dance floor. The bars are very well stocked: a lovely bottle of San Simone Pinot Grigio is available for £25 but cheaper house wine starts from as little as £13.15 a bottle. Heidsieck Monopole Champagne is £33.50 a bottle and Prosecco represents better value at £27.50. Spirits and cocktails are between £4 and £8 and lager is around £4. It can get a bit packed but the bar staff try to be as efficient as possible and the cocktails are worth the wait.
The Last Word
As it’s surrounded by offices, Amber is naturally one of those places that’s mostly frequented by suits. However, the fun, varied music and tasty drinks definitely make it worth a trip. Even if it’s a bit out of your way.
