The ViewLondon Review
This friendly, down to earth, late night cocktail bar provides a decent alternative to the nearby bars of Upper Street. The VenueChapel Market Street may not seem the most likely location for a night out, but with several good late bars Anam’s home does offer a credible alternative to Upper Street. The cosy, two floor cocktail bar was re-launched in November 2007 and, despite several changes of management and the refurbishment, it retains the modern retro feel it had when it first opened in 2004. Limited capacity upstairs can make it hard to navigate past the bar and down into the more spacious basement, but it is worth it if you can bag the comfy booths at the back and settle in for the night. Reservations are definitely recommended if you are coming en masse.
The AtmosphereThe staff at Anam are friendly and down to earth, and the compact spaces mean that a handful of customers can liven things up in no time. The late license every weekend makes it a good choice for a local night out or a group celebration.
The MusicThe roster of headline DJs at Anam includes some respectable talent from a broad spectrum of genres, including Manchester legend Greg Wilson and Andrew Galea (Freestylers/Soulseekers), and the in-house style is predominantly soulful funky house. Fortunately, for such a small venue, the crisp sound system does not prevent you from holding a conversation.
The DrinkAnam boasts a unique cocktail menu with some surprising twists like the Mint Choc Chip and a Vanilla Mojito. It is adventurous and, for the most part, pretty tasty though some might prefer to choose a classic drink instead.
The Last WordAnam is a good, if relatively pricey, option for a local night out in Islington.
