A Sam Smith’s pub located just off Marylebone High Street, the Angel in the Fields is an unusually smart branch of the franchise that manages to stay in keeping with its upper crust surroundings.

The Venue
Angel in the Fields is surprisingly well-presented for a Sam Smith’s pub, opting for polished wood flooring over homely carpets and clear open spaces over dusty alcoves. It is split on to two floors, the upper of which is slightly more lived-in, with a few comfy sofas and chairs strewn around to accommodate larger groups. Attractive stained glass windows surround the ground floor bar, and seating is available on either a stretch of red, padded benches lining the wall or an array of glossy wooden stools and chairs.

The Atmosphere
The Angel in the Fields’ more refined setting seems to attract a lot of couples looking for a quiet, intimate drink – this is not really a venue to stumble in to during a boozy night on the town. However, it is still no-frills when it comes to the casual service.

The Food
Angel in the Fields usually serves food between 12pm and 2.30pm and again from 6pm until 8pm. However, lunch time slots are variable and sometimes the kitchen remains closed until the evening. The menu - proudly displayed in the entrance - features the usual list of classic pub dishes averaging at £5.95 a meal as well as lighter bites such as sandwiches (£3.75 to £4.20) and nachos (£3).

The Drink
As usual, drinks are exclusively Sam Smith’s own brand – from wines, to spirits (averaging at £2.20 for a single measure), to beers (£2.35-£3.95 a pint). A large sign urges you to purchase the ‘Organic Cherry Fruit Beer’ – a not particularly exceptional, and mite over-acidic concoction, available at £4.80 a bottle.

The Last Word
Angel in the Fields is definitely a good option for an affordable drink or two in an area in which such an opportunity is hard to come by. Those who aren’t generally fans of Sam Smith’s may also appreciate the venues smarter, more polished appearance.
