The ViewLondon Review
A story goes that a hanging judge liked to sit over his beer at what is now the Angel pub and watch as the poor unfortunates he condemned to death drowned on the other side of the river.
The Venue
Indeed the most highly regarded characteristic of the Angel is its ideal location on the Thames, and the stunning views from both inside and outside the pub. There is plenty of seating and space in this two story venue so you’ll never miss out on facing the water. It’s definitely worth visiting on a warm day or evening to sit outside on the patio.
The interior has been comprehensively renovated with immaculate panelling and woodwork. Unfortunately, it feels as if it has lost a bit of history and character in the process.
The Atmosphere
The Angel is a very relaxed and a good place for having a beer and a chat in the evening. The staff are friendly, if a little eccentric, as are the locals who frequent this pub. If talking to an odd local about his dog (who will also be in the pub) for an hour isn’t really your thing, be sure to bring some good company along with you.
The Food
A bit bland and lacklustre, the food is not anything to write home about. It’s very reasonably priced and comes in large portions so of you’re hungry you might be tempted to have a bite. Just be warned that what you see described briefly on the menu is exactly what you get.
The Drink
A Samuel Smith’s pub, you won’t find much else.
The Last Word
If you find yourself in Rotherhithe, its certainly worth popping into the Angel for a pint. Tell your friends about the hanging judge while you look out over the river - it’ll make the place feel more interesting.
