If i need to sum up in one word, it'd be :
Terrible !!
Since the Apollo's new revamp, my excitement for drinks at the local have been dampened dramatically, I remember the Apollo years before, it was a bit seedier but full of friendly locals, food wasn't to great then either but always a warm welcoming place, and never to over crowded and a decent price for booze as well. I was there every week.
However I've returned a couple times since to see a cheap revamp with plastic wall decor and shabby shite wall paper. Prices have doubled although their food has by far gone up in quality, its gone up in quantity as well (and a nearly 30 min wait for our meals).
Im not a picky eater and will down more then my fair share, however last night could not finish my Kiev with veg and chunky chips, I asked for a take away box or something like it and was told they had nothing what so ever, and then was approached a few minutes later by a waitress who handed me a large greasy roll of cling film!! I was stunned and confused as the same time. She then proceeded to tell me that 'her cook' was not pleased with the request!
I don't always feel the need to finish my plate but when Im paying £11 + on food and 8+ for A cocktail(s) I want my damn left overs, granted its a recession and businesses need to survive, but so do I!
From a previous visit I met the manager as well, who tries to be friendly in a passive aggressive way but seemed to care less about his clientele.
So sadly my good memories at the Apollo will have to stay memories, as the new gastro pub has gone over priced for crap filled service!!
Sunday roasts at the Apollo rock! Seriously, for a pub this is the most amazing Sunday roast I have had in a long time! The beef was so tender, home-made yorkshire puddings, amazing red wine gravy - the roasted vegetables were delicious. All in all a fantastic meal - highly recommended, they also do roasted pork with crackling (looked amazing) and roast chicken, along with a few other options for the non-roast eaters. I will be surprised if one will be able to get a table on a Sunday once the word gets out about Apollo roasts!
Had dinner here last night with a group of us. Great wines, very reasonably priced and the food was excellent. It was a little slow in arriving, but I would definitely come back.
It is what it is - a great pub with good, polite staff.
Certainly worth a visit.
My partner and I went out for dinner at the Apollo on Saturday evening having been enticed by the warm atmosphere and the broad pub menu. The wine list was very good and they have a nice selection of beer, i.e. London Pride, Bombardier, etc. Despite the fact that my pork belly was overcooked, it still tasted delicious with the excellent gravy served with it, and an incredible spicy applesauce. The vegetables were grilled and cooked to perfection, and the dauphinoise potatoes were mouthwatering. My partner had the steak which he also said was excellent. We were very satisfied and had we had more time, we would have lingered for another glass of their excellent pinot noir. The Apollo is an excellent choice if you are looking for a casual pub with excellent food. The decor is that of a well worn cafe/bar with a twist of the warm, modern touch of chandeliers. Their are even a couple of leather lounge chairs if you are lucky enough to get them. I say try it out! They even have a nice breakfast menu!
I visited this bar with my family whilst visiting London. Our party included an elderly disabled lady who used a wheelchair. Upon our arrival we were welcomed by a friendly waitress who showed us to a table for 6. So far so good, although this was about to change. The washroom facilities are all downstairs, this is really not disabled friendly. There was nowhere to hang coats and bags meaning shopping bags were all over the restaurant. Looking past this the restaurant had obviously been decorated on the cheap a collection of cheap black gloss chandeliers. The chairs were ok but the tables were well worn with flaking varnish. The center piece of our table was a basket of knives and forks. Sadly despite being sat at a table for six there was only cutlery for two. There was also no menu, after a few minutes we were asked for a drinks order from another waitress. Sadly the waitress didn't know what Rose wine was and didn't know what fresh orange juice was. She came back twice to ask again what drinks we had asked for. Eventually after a 15 minute wait the drinks made their way to the table. During this time we had helped ourselves to menus from other tables and had selected from the very English menu. Following another 10 minute wait the barman came over to us informing us that two of our meals were sold out and asked we made other selections. I opted for the shepherds pie, which although the menu didn't specify the barman had stated came with vegetables. The barman then printed off the receipt bringing it over to us saying they didn't really know what was going on now and requested that we check it. After a further 40minute wait the meals came out, sadly the two shepherds pies were stone cold. This had been established by disturbing the center of the pies. They had also been served with chips and salad, not the vegetables that had been promised. As a result the two pies went back, around 3 minutes later the pies came back. The same pies. Obviously the microwave was on
The Apollo now under new managment & re launched this week. Good choice of ales London Pride & Adnams plus good range of lagers, wines & bottled beers. Decor is good blend of traddional - large pub mirror behind bar with modern style in bar area. Menu loks great with good English pub food at reasonable prices. Go on give it a try - you know you want to!
The Apollo is a decent enough spot if you're not looking for anything other than a beer. I wouldn't really head to it for a night out though...
