The ViewLondon Review
A discreet exterior belies the snug respite within, and with its brick wall garlanded by creeping greenery, Aragon House is one of Parsons Green’s most pleasant places to spend a leisurely afternoon with mates.
The Venue
You enter through an understated outdoor space with its wrought iron cafe-style seating and umbrellas, and progress into the warm and inviting main pub space. This sizeable room has sofas and a long bar at the rear end leading out to the beer garden. The beer garden is the piece de resistance and has plenty of chunky wooden garden furniture, decking and oversized potted plants. In the warmer months the barbecue churns out meaty burgers and the smell certainly whets the appetite after a few beers.
Aragon House also has a private room for parties. Called The Ted Bentley Bar, aka The Blue Room, it can accommodate up to 200 and is available for exclusive hire. With its big leather club chairs and heavy, grand curtains this room boasts a private bar and its own loos. Private parties here have that elusive house party feel without the worry of cleaning up afterwards.
The Atmosphere
The staff are very helpful and service is fast. Friendly banter flows as they chat with regulars whilst pouring their orders. Live sports are played here and sometimes groups are divided with some watching the big cricket match in The Blue Room, whilst the others soak up some rays in the beer garden. All in all it’s pretty relaxed and chilled out as people lounge in the big comfy chairs.
The Drink
The international wine list offers a range of classic tipples, but also many you might not have heard of before. A large glass of Chenin Blanc goes for a reasonable £5.50 and £14.95 a bottle, or for a more adventurous choice try the Casa La Joya Viognier for £7 and £18.50 respectively. There is good selection of Champagnes and Prosecco, starting from £23.50.
The likes of Guinness, Heineken, Sagres and Tiger make up an interesting array of beers on the pumps (£3.45-£3.80 a pint) and there are some interesting bottled varieties like the South African Savannah Dry. There is also a very impressive whisky list from Bells (£4.10), Glenfiddich and Speyside Malt (£5.60), to the 16-year-old Lagavulin Isle of Islay (£7.70) and many more. And if you’re feeling old school you could even settle in with a cigar from their selection.
The Food
If you’re here for drinks and fancy a little nibble, the cheese board is very reasonably priced at £5.50 and offers a small selection of cheese with celery, white grapes, crackers and butter. Alternatively, share a meze selection (£7) of fresh bread with hummus and black tapenade – it’s a winner. If it’s a midday affair, the lunch deals go for £8 and for this you can enjoy bangers and mash as well as a pint or glass of wine.
Their homemade burgers are their specialty (between £9 and £10), and include choices like the chicken, spicy avocado and bacon burger. If you want something a bit more classic, their signature Aragon House burger filled with bacon, Emmental cheese and gherkins always goes down a treat, and all burgers are served with salad, mayo and French fries.
The Last Word
An unpretentious bar in a typically Sloaney area, this bustling venue is a great spot for catching up with friends.
