The Artful Dodger is in a world of its own on the wrong side of the tracks (literally).

The Venue
Located on the side of a railway line, tucked away from the busy crossroads of Tower Hill, The Artful Dodger is part of a strange and insular part of London. Whilst everything around it bears the industrial grey of development, the pub remains upbeat with more in common with the history and greenery around Tower Bridge than its own grotty home turf.

The Artful Dodger is spacious and airy and the three-paned window allows floods of light into the space whilst hiding the ugliness of the railway with a frosted effect. The red carpet is hardly rich or regal but teamed with the cloth of the pool table the look is coordinated. Decoration is typically homemade with a few pictures and brewery sponsored banners and bunting for effect. The large bar seems to be the place to sit and loners are comforted there by a chirpy landlady.

The Atmosphere
A man walks into the pub and before he’s had time to sit down, a half pint of Fosters is sitting in front of him - become a regular here and this is the type of luxury you can welcome into your life. The clientele is largely locals and regulars, but the place is friendly and if alone and looking a little wistful you might be asked to play some pool, but again remember this is the Artful Dodger so watch your handkerchief. Suits occasionally venture in from their offices to break the monotony of synthetic wine bars. There is a good feel to the place and although the evening can be quiet it is not bad for pool and a pint.

The Drink
The Artful Dodger offers a small, simple selection of wine and a choice of Stella, Becks Vier, Stella, Guinness and Fosters on draught. All fairly average but prices are good.

The Last Word
It is unlikely that anyone would travel to Tower Hill for the great Artful Dodger but if you’re looking for a spot of respite after marching around the Tower then find it here.
