The ViewLondon Review

A fresh, clean cut cafe with an understated chic look that keeps the atmosphere light.

The Venue
Off Commercial Lane, the Toynbee Studios focuses on developing and showcasing new theatre work. Within this artistic atmosphere lies the Arts Bar and Cafe, a sophisticated cafe where Toynbee regulars and anyone else who fancies a coffee can sit and enjoy a drink in the lovely atmosphere. The cafe is in the Toynbee square, so the entrance is slightly far from foot traffic and the chaos of East London, which creates an extremely mellow environment for those who do follow the sign.

Huge lattice windows let in plenty of light to show off the neutral cream and pale greens to their best effect. One wall has an interesting smudged effect, whilst everything else has clean lines with some simple wooden tables and chairs with the addition of a sleek, simple bar and some brown sofas for a comfortable, slouchy drink. A vibrant touch of a sunflower on each table brings everything together well, and the high ceilings with hanging spheres of light create a feeling of endless space and tranquillity.

The Atmosphere
The crowd are a mixed bunch of people that all work well together. Young, hip and arty types rub shoulders with wise, older theatre buffs, and there’s also a few who have no interest in art, but are just in the cafe for the atmosphere. The staff are extremely friendly, so there’s a feeling of soothing calmness and relaxing vibes. Everyone seems to know each other, by recognition of a familiar face or as proper friends, so many amiable hellos do flutter around the room. However, you won’t feel left out if you’re not a regular as you’ll still get a couple of smiles. At times it can feel a little too quiet, so if a peaceful coffee is not what you’re craving then this place isn’t ideal.

The Food
The simple menu is full of healthy choices, hot and cold, and vary daily due to the promise of fresh specials. There’s also a few pastries and cakes available for those with a sweet tooth.

The Drink
The hot drinks are served in generously roomy mugs, and for under £2, you can get a decent cup of any type of coffee you desire. There is also a small selection of wines for £12 - £16, which isn’t bad for some quality choices. The usual bar favourites such as bottled beers and fruit juices are also on the drinks list.

The Last Word
A little secret find that’s perfect to get away from it all over a warm drink and a stimulating conversation.
