Saw a lot of good reviews about this place, so thought we'd give it a go.
WOW! What an experience. Had smoked salmon (created on the premises we were told) and a haggis Scotch egg to start. Sublime. for main curse we tried the 1kg Porterhouse to share. I've had the privilege to dine in some amazing steakhouses in my past, and this is definitely up there with the best. Had a Minevois (don't see these around too much) with it and thought it was agood suggestion form the list.
Would have liked to try the desserts, but we had to concede defeat, great meal.
Service was fun and attentive. Will definitely be back. Sunday roast probably, here its good.
A must try!
My feelings about this place are mixed. The atmosphere on the whole is warm and inviting and the food is pretty decent for a pub - good without being too try hard although a few of us found the sauces a little too salty. Even the red wine was pretty decent for the price.
The problem, however, was the service. That's not to say the staff were unpleasant - they weren't. It's just that the whole evening was plagued by service issues. We were a pretty large group and when the mains arrived, one of my friends didn't get his. No explanation was offered, no apology. We all just sat there for nearly ten minutes while our food got cold waiting for his burger to arrive. I think they must have just forgotten to make it. Trying to catch any of the staff's attention to find out where his main was was nearly impossible. And when his burger eventually arrived, they had forgotten the bacon. The other irritation was cutlery. They cleared our cutlery after our starter and never replaced it so even after the missing burger arrived we were all sat there for at least another 5 minutes until another waitress was asked to bring us some more cutlery. But she only gave cutlery to half the table and then went off to do something else, so the other half of the table were forced to ask yet another waitress for their cutlery!. Then it was another 5 minutes before we could catch anyone's attention to bring us ketchup. And so on and so forth. One friend had to order her gin and tonic three times before it came and another asked for a hot chocolate twice before they managed to process the order. When the bill finally came, discretionary service was included. We paid most of it as I always feel bad insisting on removing it - especially when the staff are pleasant enough - but I don't think it was really deserved.
All in all a disappointment, considering some of the rave reviews on here. Not the worst experience, but definitely not the greatest either.
I am quite the regular to this hidden gem in Hoxton and enjoy my time there each and every time.
Whenever i am looking for a great steak dinner The Bacchus is where i am heading. Equally my wife loves the wide range of vegetarian options she can choose from.
I have never seen or even heard of the chef shouting and swearing, all of the chefs are quite chirpy and regularly walk around to see how there food is being appreciated.
I have lived in Hoxton for a lot of years now and hope that The Bacchus is paving the way for other quality establishments to come to the area.
My experience in Bacchus was rather a weird one, place is great, prices reasonable and we were told to try the food, and it's a good job we didn't because on that particular night what was witnessed can only be described as an episode from one of Goron Ramsay's shows...i.e. tears, tantrums and swearing as the kitchen staff seemed (actually more sounded) unhappy to take another food order from a couple who just walked in. Don't get me wrong the pub itself is a nice local hangout, but i did feel sorry for the couple, lets just say be wary of ordering food around 9pm as they are not keen to do anyone a favour.
Went to Bacchus for the first time last Saturday, what a great pub. Atmosphere was lively but relaxed, food was amazing (Best steak I've had in London) and the staff were really friendly. I live in Shoreditch, so will definitely be going back.
