Balls Brothers Brook Street is a contemporary wine bar that’s popular with City folk, even in the middle of chic Mayfair.

The Venue
The view from the outside of Balls Brothers Brook Street allows you a glimpse of the warm lighting and mahogany colours that beckon you inside. Step downstairs, and you’ll be met with a large basement space with lots of well placed tables and a long bar with a few suited and booted men lingering over yet another glass of wine. The simple decor with a limited colour palette and a few pieces of random artwork on the walls stirs no excitement, but prevents the bar from becoming dull.

The Atmosphere
Balls Brothers Brook Street definitely appeals to a sophisticated level of clientele looking for a relaxed drink after work. The banker crowd have found this place amidst cutesy cafes for the Bond Street girls, and they clearly feel at home here. Talk is of business and pleasure, and though no one totally lets go, the air of laid back chic is still retained. The bar staff are friendly but professional, giving advice on choices of wine for those who understand and appreciate the complexity of wine without taking it too seriously.

The Drink
The wine list is extensive and global, but with the focus honed on French provinces, where many would argue the grape is cultivated the best. Prices vary from £15 to £40 a bottle, giving most budgets a chance to sample what the bar has to offer. Balls Brothers Brook Street even has four of its own wines for customers to try exclusively. A selection of high quality wines are also available at £4-£9 for a double shot for those need something a bit stronger after a hard day.

The Last Word
This established wine bar has done well at the Mayfair location. It’s kept everything straightforward to maintain the spotlight on the reasonable wine selection.
