Located in a quiet neighbourhood near Wimbledon, Bar 191 delivers authentic Spanish tapas and other Mediterranean delights. A quaint setting, great service, and affordable prices all make it worth the trip.

The Venue
Bar 191’s tucked away residential location makes for a pleasant dining experience. As you enter, you have the choice to either sit outside surround by a picket fence or inside where there are about fourteen more tables. Large tan, earthy tiles make up the floor, while off white coloured walls make for a simple and rustic décor. Wood tables are kept ultra basic with no tablecloths and large colourful prints on walls make a bold statement.

The Atmosphere
It seems that most of the clientele are locals to the area and repeat customers. Once you sample the excellent Spanish cuisine, you might find yourself one of those repeat customers too. Staff are professional, personable and willing to offer suggestions.

The Food
Along with several tapas items, there is also a set menu for groups of eight or more from £14.50 per person including three tapas, bread and dessert tasters. Other offers include lunch specials like two tapas for £7 and three tapas for £10. If you like a good roast, they also do a Sunday roast special for £15 which also includes a glass of house wine and dessert.

A great hot tapas choice is the patatas bravas (£3.95) which are cubed potatoes in a spicy tomato based sauce. The potatoes are cooked just right and the sauce has just the right amount of heat. Chorizo with peppers and onion (£5.25) is a mildly spiced Spanish sausage sautéed with finely cut onions, yellow and green peppers. Though this tapas dish is tasty, the flavours don’t seem to come together. For something lighter the mixed salad(£3.50) is an excellent choice. This delicious salad is a fresh and crunchy mixture of field greens, red cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes dressed with a mint and garlic vinaigrette. The fresh tomato salad with manchego (£3.95) is a wonderful combination of juicy tomatoes, red onion, cubed machego cheese and bread dressed in a balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Another hot tapas choice, cauliflower fritters (£3.95), is made up of bite size cauliflower florettes lightly battered and fried. They are crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside and not in the least bit greasy. For aubergine lovers, the oven baked aubergine with cheese and tomato (£5.25) is an excellent choice. Thin slices of tender aubergine are combined with creamy melted cheddar cheese, sliced onion and tomato sauce. For dessert the tiramisu (£4.60) is light, creamy and not too moist, though it could be improved with move liquor. If you’re looking for a traditional Spanish dessert then try the almond tart with cream (£4.60). Served warm, this nutty and sweet tart is finished off with powdered sugar and fresh cream.

The Drink
There are several wines to choose from with red, whites and roses from Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Italy and Spain of course. Bottles range from £14 to £40. You will also find champagne, sparkling wines, and homemade sangria.

The Last Word
