The ViewLondon Review
Belied by the huge neon sign outside, Bar 242 is a stylish yet homely bar and restaurant that combines a sophisticated layout with a friendly, local community vibe. The VenueThe entrance to Bar 242 is set a short way back from noisy Blackfriars Road, up a winding, cobbled driveway. A small spiral staircase leads down into the diminutive bar, which is situated under a railway arch. It used to be a wine cellar and the bare brickwork and arched doorways are still visible. The restaurant area is separated from the bar, and there is a patio with tables and chairs out of site of the road, where you can have a smoke or enjoy the fresh air.
Both rooms are small, and yet the tables are set out in such a way as to provide lots of seating without it looking too cramped. The arch means that the ceiling is fairly low, and this combines with the soft lighting and comfy leather seating to give the place a relaxed yet sophisticated glow.
The AtmosphereThe bar has a welcoming, familiar feel to it that comes not only from the layout and decor but also from the owners and the staff, who are very friendly and helpful. The clientele of Bar 242 often comprises of media types who work in the area. It is relaxed and unpretentious, and there is no need to dress up. It’s perfect for chilled-out lunches or after-work drinks, or for a laugh and a chat with friends. The music is very much in the background to the venue and is not really a feature.
The FoodThe restaurant at Bar 242 provides a wide-ranging list of various classic dishes including fish, chicken and steak, and there are also bar snacks such as platters to share. The prices are reasonable and the portion sizes good.
The DrinkThe wines and spirits list is reasonable considering the size of the place, and there is a fair number of bottled beers. Draught beer is available, but don’t expect too much of a choice. Again, the prices are what you’d expect for a bar such as this in the area.
The Last WordWest End style blends with a local feel and a warm welcome in Bar 242. This is the place to go for those who just want a chilled-out meal or drinks with friends or colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere.
