The word ‘bar’ is misleading in this case: Bar Lulas is a pub, just not fitted with the usual old dusty carpet and stuffy sofas. Despite the updated look, it’s still rather unimpressive.

The Venue
High Road in Willesden is not exactly the most vibrant of areas after sundown: it’s fair to say that it becomes pretty deserted. Bar Lulas could contribute to the vibrancy of the area; unfortunately, it doesn’t. If anything, it helps promote some unflattering stereotypes.

The venue is quite small. The pub - once a shop - was revamped some years ago and, thanks to good management, still looks pretty fresh. The decor is far from cutting edge, expect benches distributed along the walls to seat small groups around a table of simple design. Basically, it’s furniture you’d expect to find in an airport. As the bright lights show, Bar Lulas is nicely clean; however, the wattage could do with being toned down to create more of an atmosphere. Bar Lulas has multiple screens showing all sort of sports whenever possible and, since the place is small, it is hard to ignore them.

The Atmosphere
The crowd at Bar Lulas is usually comprised of men of all ages heading along to watch a game. That said, there is also an intriguing girl power feel to the place. Bad points? The unfriendly attitude towards non-locals and the volume of the regulars after a few (often too many) drinks: if you’re looking for a quiet drink, stay clear - especially if there’s a game on.

The Drink
Prices are kept low at Bar Lulas to attract customers and the selection is not particularly impressive. Guinness Extra Cold, Carlsberg Export, Corona and Budvar are the most exotic offers. The positive thing is nothing goes close to £3. Draughts are £2.10-£2.80 whilst bottles are even cheaper at £2.10-£2.70.

The Last Word
The goal of Bar Lulas is to serve drinks to a crowd of undiscerning locals. Nothing more. As such, little care is put into the rest: don’t expect any thrills from this place.
