The ViewLondon Review

Review byMichelle Lee23/08/2007
With its sleek decor and crowd of chic young Londoners sipping cocktails, Bar Room Bar looks promising. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving and this local bar isn’t the best Putney has to offer.

The Venue
Located on the High Street, near to both the tube and national rail stations, this chain bar looks like an enticing option as you head home from work and see the large windows filled with post-office punters. Aim for one of the comfier booth-type tables if you’re in a large group, otherwise try to snap up one of the tall tables with stools for two. There’s no outside area but on summer evenings the large front windows open out on to the streets giving a relaxed and casual feel to the whole affair.

The Atmosphere
The vibe is a buzzy one and this place can get pretty packed, especially at weekends. The result is a noisy cheerfulness but still lacks any real energy and you might feel like you’re standing around waiting for the night to take off long after your first drink. Bar staff are fast and friendly, but at busy times expect to jostle for space in the queue of trendy young things ordering large rounds.

The Food
It’s all about the pizza at Bar Room Bar, especially when the hand flung, stone baked goodies are two for one all day on Tuesdays. With a good selection of vegetarian and meat options, the pizzas aren’t hugely imaginative but do the trick when it comes to ending those cocktail induced hunger pangs. There are also salads and platters to share, all at reasonable bar prices.

The Drink
There’s a good selection of beer on tap and bottled, as well as reasonably varied wine list. Although cocktails are what they do well at Bar Room Bar and on Thursdays the two for one deal sees most punters with an attractive looking mixed drink (or two) in hand. Prices are reasonable for the area although slightly more expensive than local pubs.

The Last Word
Bar Room Bar is one of the nicer looking places on the High Street, pulling in a young fashion conscious crowd keen on cocktail hour. While the drinks and decor satisfy, the place lacks any kind of unique vibe or atmosphere in its crowded surroundings. However, the cocktail and pizza deals do make it a worthwhile place to visit if you’re in the area.
