Bar Sonic has the potential to become the new symbol of Deptford, thanks to its live music and friendly atmosphere. It’s just waiting to be discovered by herds of regular wannabes!

The Venue
Looks wise, Bar Sonic seems to be slightly confused about its own identity, being somewhere between a full-on live music venue and a local drinking spot. The decor only perpetuates this, being fairly bright and unpretentious with interesting touches like a cool bicycle stuck on the wall making it appeal to the young and hip. However, there are also game machines and a pool table in a game room downstairs that would fit into any pub without musical aspirations.

The Atmosphere
For a place that acts rough and tough, Bar Sonic is surprisingly friendly and could be accused of being downright sweet. The bar staff are beyond lovely and will quickly make you part of their extended family the second time you show up. And with a 2am licence (a rarity in this area), you will see no reason to leave.

The crowd is mostly comprised of two distinct groups: locals of any age popping in and the younger students from nearby Goldsmiths College arriving later on in the evening. If the first are often attracted by the sports broadcasted on TV, the latter are drawn inside for the live music regularly played here.

The Music
Bar Sonic is quickly gaining a reputation as a live music venue: their selection is eclectic with any genre from jazz to reggae well represented. DJs on duty on Thursday nights complete the musical landscape of the bar.

The Food
The food here is mostly cooked and served to spare the customers from going to a nearby eatery. With this in mind, they offer a short selection of favourite dishes at rock bottom prices: you have the choice of burgers (beef or chicken), steak, chips, onion rings, garlic mushrooms and even quiche, with many choices costing an incredible 99p! On Sunday, a full selection of bar food is also available and is cheap, easy and fulfilling, if a tad greasy since everything is fried.

The Drink
Uncomplicated in the drink offering, Bar Sonic can still surprise. The wine list, made up of five or so bottles, may be unimpressive, but there are a couple of cool beers (all around £3) like Red Stripe, the East African Tusker or the rare, almost illegal, Guinness 7.5% imported from Nigeria. Becks Vier and Budvar are available on draught. The selection of spirits is also very good: this bar has learnt how to cater to the specific tastes of the different ethnicities comprising their pool of regulars. Courvoisier, for example, is very popular.

The Last Word
Bar Sonic may not be impressive in decor or its food offering; however, it’s a genuine place providing good music whilst staying true to its simple roots.
