The ViewLondon Review
Bar Txt is definitely a party bar. And it’s a good spot for Croydon locals not wanting to trek into central London just to enjoy a good mojito.
The Venue
Despite the horrendous name (why text speak?), the design of Bar Txt is actually borderline sophisticated with a neat all-black frontage and lots of large floor-to-ceiling windows that can be opened out when the weather heats up. Sorry, IF the weather heats up. And it’s not all about the exterior, either. Inside, the white walls are enlivened by funky prints and modern art, adding flair to the space without being overly pretentious, and the cool light fittings have the impact of chandeliers without the unnecessary flounce. Even the seating is elegant – a mix of dark woods and boxy white armchairs. In all, it’s clearly been well-thought-out and, although it’s not the most original decor in the capital, it manages to be stylish.
The Atmosphere
Bar Txt is definitely a party bar and the atmosphere starts to gear up from early evening at the weekend. People dress to impress and arrive in the mood to really enjoy the evening. They host regular happy hour nights that are worth making the most of – and many people do – and also events like fancy dress parties and dance nights. The staff handle the continued churning out of cocktails well and you’re not left waiting too long to be served, even if it’s during the busy happy hour period, which is admirable.
The Food
Unimaginative, perhaps, the food really plays second fiddle to the cocktails and is designed to be easy and quick. Expect platters, burgers and light bites. And the prices are reasonable with the platters barely pushing over the £10 mark and other dishes costing around £5. Lining the stomach is an easy option, then.
The Drink
Cocktails rule the roost at Bar Txt and they’re well priced at £7-£7.50, covering all the classics. The bloody mary here is surprisingly good with a strong hit of Tobasco sauce (go on, be daring and ask for extra) and Worcestershire sauce, a nice kick of vodka, sweet tomato juice and salt and pepper. A meal in itself. Alternatively, try the other old favourite, the mojito. They use fresh brown sugar, providing a pleasant, sweet crunch, and fresh mint – although they don’t overdo the ‘garden’, keeping the drink well balanced. The kick of the rum is pleasant and doesn’t overpower the drink’s delicate sweetness. Nicely done and for just £7.50? Thumbs up.
The Last Word
Txt Bar is gr8 (sorry, couldn’t resist).
