The ViewLondon Review
One of London’s better known sports bars brings a lad’s night out to The City. With an electric atmosphere on nights with big sporting events, expect lots of shouting at the TV and lager-swilling – brilliant! The VenueThe Barracuda Bar is a good choice if you’re tired of being squeezed into tiny little pubs to watch the game. The large space does get pretty crammed on big sports nights, but the capacity makes for an incredible atmosphere. There’s plenty of seating in the form of rows of wooden tables with nice touches showing off the sport theme such as steel signs naming famous sporting grounds and heroes (be it Twickenham or Sir Bobby Moore). There’s also an underlying South African vibe about the place.
However, if you’re here for the sport then you’re more likely to be glued to the decent large screen TVs that are easy to view across the bar rather than admiring what’s adourning the walls. Still, it’s a nice touch and at the end of the day this is a sports bar for patrons more interested in a decent pint and their team winning than grandiose design.
The AtmosphereThe expansive Barracuda Bar is always pumping on big sports nights, and the atmosphere is totally different depending on which night you attend. Off season or during the day it may feel a little empty, but come on match nights and you’ll experience an electric atmosphere as punters cheer on their team with the ever-present screams of “Ref!” emanating across the bar (well it has to be said!). During the day you’re more likely to catch City suits escaping the office for a quiet one.
Although this is perhaps best known as a sports bar, it’s worth noting that they also do regular live music and DJ nights with Brazillian parties being held at the weekend.
The DrinkThere’s a decent range of draught and bottled beers to keep the beer-guzzling lads happy, at reasonable prices for the area. Fosters, John Smiths, Kronenberg and Guinness can be spied on the taps with the ever popular San Miguel in bottles.
There’s a basic wine list made up mostly of new world wines at £4.95 glass. Food is also available - simple dishes on the whole, but some of them have an interesting global influence that adds a bit of fun to the menu.
The Last WordBarracuda Bar is a good choice if you’re stuck for a place to cheer your team on to glory or drown your misery as they crawl to dismal failure. Get there early when the big games are showing to even stand a chance at getting a seat and enjoy the great atmosphere.
