The ViewLondon Review
Loud and lively upstairs and secluded and comfortable downstairs, Be at One Spitalfields offers an atmosphere for every customer – and with over 160 cocktails, there’s a drink for everyone, too.
The Venue
Less than five minutes’ walk from Liverpool Street station, Be at One Spitalfields has a sleek windowed facade that leads straight into the bar. There are a few tables to the edges of the room and some bar stools right at the window, but the space is mainly open to accommodate the crowds whose sheer volume at peak times often results in an overspill onto the pavement outside, especially during their massively popular happy hours. The bar takes up the back of the room and stairs to the left lead down to the lounge area. Sumptuous booth seating, deep reds, mirrors and soft lighting make the lounge a real contrast to upstairs.
The Atmosphere
On weeknights you can expect the bar to be packed out with office workers from nearby Bishopsgate, and weekends see crowds drawn in from Spitalfields Market across the road. A daily happy hour where you buy one cocktail and get the same one free keeps the punters coming. But while upstairs is likely to be heaving, the downstairs lounge is a more secluded place, offering something for those who want a quiet drink just as much as those who want a big night out. The lounge can also be hired for parties, and is a great space for big groups. And as with the other Be at Ones in the chain, the bartenders really add to the atmosphere with their super-friendly service.
The Drink
A revamped menu offers classics, disco favourites and some Be at One originals. The English fizz (£8.50) is quintessentially British, blending Hendrick’s gin and elderflower liqueur with muddled mint, fresh lemon juice and cucumber syrup topped up with soda water. If you’re looking for something a little different, then the Johnny Cash (£7.50) is for you - Havana Club Especial rum is shaken with homemade chilli syrup, fresh lime juice and mint leaves for a twist on the mojito. Another remix on the traditional is the Maple margarita (£7.50), a drink that combines tequila, lemon juice, maple syrup and apple juice in a long glass. And The Pippin (£7.50) is another moreish blend of gin and elderflower, this time shaken with apple juice, fresh lime juice, egg white, sugar and orange bitters – it's so refreshing it won’t be long before you guzzle it down. There are also some fruity non-alcoholic cocktails and milkshakes from £3.70, and a succinct list of wines from £3 for a 125ml glass.
The Last Word
Whether you’re looking for drinks after work, a catch up with friends or a big night out, Be at One Spitalfields has the atmosphere and the cocktails to keep you coming back for more.
