I went to this place with my family after an opera. It was meant to be my father-in-law's birthday dinner. My impression was pretty lukewarm, especially when I noticed the bill (£200 for two courses for five people!).
The atmosphere was nice, and the staff was friendly, but our waiter seemed to be very tired. First, he forgot to order my meal, so the whole family sat waiting while they fixed a salad for me. Later, he poured the wine into my water glass, although it was promptly replaced. He then tried to take my brother-in-law's plate while he was in mid-bite. If we were meant to have olives for our cover charge, they never appeared. The bread was nothing special, and we weren't given any plates.
The food was fairly good, though, with the exception of my husband's. It was meant to be a pasta dish with tiger prawns, but they were clearly ordinary small prawns and the sauce was disappointing. The risotto primavera was reported as good, though lackluster. I was expecting a few chunks of grilled tuna with my salad, but instead got an enormous, and delicious, steak with the vegetables on the side. Two different kinds of ravioli were reported as fantastic.
The chocolate bomb pudding was also reported as fantastic. The rest of us had ice cream and sorbet. The cherry flavor was especially nice.
This was the worst meal I ever had in my entire life. The starter of ravioli was bland and very chewy and covered in oil. If I had cooked the main meal of pasta, braised steak and tomato at home I would have thrown it straight in the bin, it was disgusting. It sounded very nice on the menu, but sadly did not match the description at all.
I complained and the meal was replaced with an equally disgusting meal of burnt lamb chops. By this time I had had enough and left the restaurant. A dreadful experience I would not recommend this place to my worst enemies.
When my sister suggested Bertorelli, I thought, sounds good. But, beware! We had the set menu priced at £15.50 to £18.50, and Oh My God it was terrible! The soup was disgusting, my starter looked like catfood although tasted okay and the main courses were, in my opinion, abysmal.
Everything was overpriced and the service was slow. The cover charge was for a few puny olives and a bit of bread. Take my advice and stay away. Save your money and don't go to Bertorelli.
Bertorelli had quite possibly the worst service I've ever experienced in a London restaurant. And the food wasn't up to much either. The crab with artichocke starter was woeful. The mains arrived, but not ours. The waiter seemed irritated that we didn't want them and eventually came back with four correct orders, but not mine.
As for the service, surly doesn't describe it. The antipasti included in the cover charge never materialised, despite our several requests. And we had warm wine. Bertorelli is definitely one to miss.
My wife and I went to Bertorelli the other day and this will be the only and last time we go there. Sadly the food was not up to much and the service at Bertorelli was poor. Save your money go to Burger King instead.
I had lunch with three friends at the Floral Street Bertorelli restaurant on Saturday 1 July 2006. The restaurant was completely unknown to us. First impressions were good, warm and clean interior, air conditioned and it had a good ambiance. We chose the set lunch, which was two courses for £15.50 and shared a bottle of Frascatti. We anticipated £20.00 per head which we felt was adequate for lunch with a glass of wine. Imagine our shock when we received a bill for over £92.00.
When we queried the amount, the waitress who did not smile at all, said that the £6.00 cover charge was for bread, olives etc. I told her that we were not offered olives and only two of our party each had one very modest slice of focatia bread, and the water was from the tap. She then offered to remove the £6.00 cover charge. But we then discovered that we had also been given a 10% service charge for very moderate service and overall we felt that we had been overcharged for a very modest meal. Needless to say, we will not be recommending Bertorelli to our friends as good value for money.
Bertorelli's is nice enough but beware their billing and champagne icing, they leave the tip element open after already charging 12.5% on the bill. Bertorelli's have a happy hour but beware - the champagne is served warm.
I went to Bertorelli's for the first time and ordered Pumpkin risotto before heading to an opera across the road. The risotto was the worst I've experienced ever. It had an appalling texture of rice pudding, no flavour, and to add insult to injury the chef had sprinkled almond armaretti biscuit (sickly sweet) all over it.
I was unimpressed after paying 11 quid for the risotto, plus 3 quid cover charge. I did not have time to order another meal at Bertorelli's and had to leave for the opera on an empty stomach.
Oh dear, what happened? Bertorelli's has changed since the last time we visited. This time the food was luke-warm, the scallops amounted to one scallop sliced into three portions and the service was slow and indifferent at best. We shall not return to Bertorelli's.
At a recent pre-theatre dinner at Bertorelli's with my family (wife and two children) the food was OK, but with cover and "discretionary" service charges making up nearly 45% of the bill, I will not be returning!
On a cold, wet Monday evening, the warmth of the Bertorelli's welcome for a pre thatre supper at 5.30pm was excellent.
Great food, at reasonable prices, and a very pleasant attitude to service marked this out as somewhere to return to. First class( perticularly the Lamb shank!)
