Although the food was adequate this is not a family pub! A man I can only presume was the landlord made it very clear that our big group of adults and children were not welcome - despite us spending a couple of hundred pounds on dinner and drinks. Will not be returning. So many other family friendly pubs with less grumpy landlords!

went here late summer 2011, getting off to avoid traffic of hammersmith broadway ! its a great location, it was v quiet. Had great wine and good service and had a few light starters to share with my girlfriend like scallops, all gorgeous but came to £50 so not cheap. Was amazed when i saw the poor reviews for this place. I had no cause for complaint but it is out the way.
We went here today for Sunday lunch. We were told we would need to need to wait for a table inside since they don't serve food outside. No problem. One of us went to order drinks. Having waited at the bar for 5 mins some other people walked up to the bar and the barman proceeded to serve them. We asked if we were invisible and was told that 'we look after our regulars first, they support our business all year round'. Needless to say we didn't hang around. I have never heard of such a rude attitude to customers...
So how many times do you need to be ignored before you become a regular then? How may customers do you need to lose??
I went to this pub at the end of summer last year (2008) with my friend and was totally let down.
It was a busy summer's day and we waited in line to be served at the bar. When a bar tender came to serve us we ordered two Pimms with fruit.
The bar tender said it would take a while to make them (well it took us a while to wait in line to be served!).
He asked us if we would mind while he served another customer before he made our drinks. We didn't think this was entirely fair (I've never been asked that by a bar tender at a bar before).
The bar tender served another customer then proceeded to serve several more, ignoring us. With no one willing to serve us at the bar we decided to move outdoors because there were waiters walking around the seated areas serving customers and we hoped we might get served this way.
Five to ten minutes after sitting down we were finally served. We ordered our drinks and then waited and waited.
After about 15 minutes we gave up and managed to get the attention of a third staff member. We told them that we'd ordered our drinks 15 minutes ago and she said she would find out what the story is.
That was the last we heard of her too, so we were still waiting for our drinks. By this time we had been waiting around 35 minutes for our drinks.
We finally managed to track down a fourth member of staff who eventually gave us our drinks.
It appears the bar had recently changed hands/management when we were there, which is most probably what has led to such a downfall.
The staff and management need to to learn the basics of customer service, because the way they currently operate is completely unacceptable and with no respect for the customer.
Terrible food! I went to the Black lion with some friends and we were disappointed with the food, maybe because it was Monday?!
The staff were tired to serve ( perhaps as it was after the boat race and because there were only a few customers) and they made you feel guilty if you gave them some work to do.
Shoud we go out only at the weekend to have a meal, because at that time we get more attention as that is when the governor can earn the 'big' money???
The meal which I do not recomended was: saugages with mash potatoes (flooded in salty gravy and the mash tasted like instant even though they kept saying all the food was home made?), and lamb with burned potatoes (....they only had two portions to cook all night and still managed to burn).
I do not want to leave you with bad taste (which I had) so I will finish with something nice, the music was fantastic.
Awful. The management recently changed and what a shame. This once local pub has been stripped of all character and charm. The only thing going for this pub is its location. You would be better off walking just a bit futher to the other charming pubs near by.
This pub has recently changed hands and has been spruced up, food as well as decor.. The staff were very friendly, especially the manager.
The food was good and well worth the money. The pork belly and lamb chops were perfect as were the sides they came with. The fish was slightly on the drier side and when told the manager seemed happy to get the feedback.
This is a good pub for food and atmosphere and I would recommend it to anyone.
The Black Lion has friendly bar staff, a good crowd and pleasant music. There's a problem with the food and attitude though.
I ordered roast beef which cost about ten quid. The portions of Yorkshire pud and veg were small - about half size - but no better quality than average. The beef was good but there was very little of it. And the whole meal was only lukewarm.
The waiter said Sorry about that, and disappeared. There was no offer of a discount or even a free cup of coffee. The Black Lion calls itself a gastro-pub but I think they're taking the mick.
The Black Lion has really improved under the new management. Really friendly staff, a great bar menu and a fantastic French influenced restaurant in the old skittle alley.
The Black Lion has a cool quiz night on Sundays that always attracts a big crowd. Great cosy atmosphere, huge beer garden for summer, right on the river in Hammersmith. Well worth a look.
