Overall, a nice pub with a lovely outside area, but the toilets (feedback is for both male and female as we were here in a couple) are truly awful, - they need a serious cleaning and smell very very bad. Also, 2 pints of beer and a small glass of soda water (from the tap, not a bottle) set us back £9.80. As such, a disappointing experience, and therefore 2 stars only.
The beer is too expensive and almost taste old. The toilets are just a joke and there is no food available.
I have to say, that the pub is getting worse since the new manager has taken over the pub. And sometimes when he is drunk he can be really unpolite and rude and you have to count everytime the change, because he is not giving it correctly...
I absolutely like going to this pub. Nice, warm fireplace in cold nights and a lovely open garden in the summer! They dont have a telly, which is fine as it's different from all the other ones where blokes get pissed over football or whatnot. The staff are lovely, the Sunday roast is superb, the pool tables (inside and outdoor) add up to the pub's overall charm. I don't remember one single time being disappointed going here. It gets bad press for not having enough displays of it's criminal history, but do we really want to glorify crime? If you need any telling about Cornell's murder by the Kray's, as the pub landlord. I found that he was nice enough to entertain customers old and new. Definitely going back there. Hopefully soon!
shame this pub use to be one of the best ,sadly now one of the worstpoor service, the toilet were a discrace not cleaned since god no when, light fittings missing from the toilet so there is little light. I have used this pub for the past 25 years and this saddens me to see such a great pub being left to go to rack and ruin, sad to say i will not be returning in a hurry.I hope the people that own the pub turn it around and make it a great pub again.
i really liek this pub and i agree the roast dinners are really good . its always a nice atmosphere and the bar staff are friendly are there are 2 lovely cats !
I really really like the Blind Beggar and to be honest , I think a few of the people who have written bad stuff about it on this website and others sound a bit disgruntled.
I went in there on Friday night and there are no red lanterns mate. It's just a nice decent friendly local pub with a pool table and a jukebox. A few suits were there on Fiday night but it's just basically a really nice pub. The old battleaxe who used to work there is gone and the barstaff are nice. And there's no Krays stuff on the walls like people keep saying there is!
We have been going to the Blind Beggar for 4 years and it's nicer than ever. You can get your dinner, have a drink, listen to live music or play a game of pool.
Had a very nice night in here last Wednesday, but a strange one on Thursday. Shame there is no food served at night time. The Blind Beggar has very friendly barstaff on the first time we visited but when we returned on the Thursday night, we found the manager to be very rude. After pouring a pint, she stamped it down in front of us , and as we were looking around at the decor, asked us if we were in the right pub!
Seemingly, she was annoyed we had made her get off her chair by the fire where she was having a cigarette. It amused us ever so slightly as we don't know what we had done to annoy her. It's nice for a pub to be consistent and we did not feel very comfortable at the Bling Beggar. We finished our drinks and moved on.
I'm slightly baffled by the review stating the Blind Beggar Sunday meal was bad. My family and I have Sunday dinner here every few weeks and it's superb. If the meat was tough, why didn't this person tell a member of staff instead of moaning about it? And in most pubs, you have to collect your own cutlery and condiments from a trolley or the bar.
I can't fault the food that we have when we come and our children are always treated superbly. The meat and presentation of the food is always lovely. I would not usually post on one of these websites , but I was looking up some pubs to take the kids to and saw someone had written this. The service, food and level of cleanliness is always second to none at the Blind Beggar.
I've been in the Blind Beggar a few times, for a drink or two. It's a fairly nice boozer with decent enough prices and always serves a great pint of lager - which I think you don't always get everywhere. The beer garden is nice in the summer. The Blind Beggar is great for a quick pint.
We recently had a Sunday roast in the Blind Beggar which was sub-standard. The meals were served in what can only be described as soup bowls and despite my asking for only a little gravy on the meat, it was swimming in gravy. The beef was tough and I was unable to cut through with a knife. The service at the Blind Beggar is very poor - when I asked where the cutlery was I was told to get it myself and had to wade through a group of Sunday morning drinkers.
The table was dirty and there were no condiments. When I was asked if our meals were okay I told them and received no apology. In fact nobody came back to us. We left the food and drink disgusted.
I really like the way the Blind Beggar looks & feels now. It's still the Blind Beggar & always will be but at least they're not relying on history anymore. It's a top pub -go there and get hammered.
I decided to post a comment about Blind Beggar after reading some slightly derogatory comments on other respected review websites.
The Blind Beggar has recently been refurbished by the landlord David Dobson who, after 5 years of being the face of the pub, is now the owner. Gone are the Krays pictures adorning the walls, though the staff will happily tell you about the pubs history if asked, to be replaced by comfy sofa's, well lit fires and cats running around, enjoying the ambience. The Beggar also has the finest collection of lagers and ales around - not many places hold Speckled Hen and London Pride and they also have Fosters, Kronenbourg and Kronenbourg Blanc, as well as Grolsch soon I am told. A new chef serves traditional pub fayre as well as daily specials, everything is hand prepared and homemade on the premises.
The Blind Beggar even have a late licence until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and the pub is also open till late on Mondays when local favourites, The Burns Brothers play old classics with the seating area becoming a makeshift dancefloor. A huge beer garden sits outside, the only one of such a size in the borough, making exciting times for the coming summer. Well done and nice work Blind Beggar, very friendly and welcoming and to be enjoyed by all.
I've been to the blind beggar on every visit to London and had great food everytime, friendly staff always. I also love the pub cats PIP and MOLLY. On my first visit to the Blind Beggar PIP slept on my lap for almost an hour and I really wanted to take him home. Wont be long till my next visit but are the cat's still there? My last visit was in Nov 2005.
Have to agree with the last coment posted here. The Blind Beggar is going to be back to its best very soon. Don't bother going anywhere else for a drink. If you want a warm friendly place for a decent pint, go to the Blind Beggar. Went on a Monday though and it can get a bit crazy. Monday nights are the best around.
Open late, the Burns Brothers play a load of old classics and the staff are jumping all around the place clearly enjoying themselves. Blind Beggar is a real locals' pub that makes a stranger feel at home. Nice work.
Too many pubs make the mistake of becoming really trendy but the Blind Beggar has gone down the great route of keeping the pub traditional . It hasn't looked too great over the last few months but the new owner has completely redone the entire pub. There are neat plasma TVs , chandeliers and pictures of the pub in years gone by hang on the walls.
It is nice to come to a pub and be made to feel welcome by the staff and have a bit of a chat with the landlord.
I went to the Blind Beggar for lunch last week and had a huge sirloin steak , cooked to perfection and cheap as chips. The Blind Beggar is the best pub in the area and we think it's only going to get better.
I saw this was in the list of pubs to avoid so I decided to leave a message of the opposite. I went here quite some time ago now (watched the eclipse in the garden) and I have to say I was weary before we went (was studying a I.T course up the road) but the staff were chatty, maybe it's because I find the Kray thing quite interesting, who knows, but I talked to the barman for some time about it. Top place, well worth a 'trip down old English history' and a beer while you're at it...what more can you ask for!!
We had a great night in the Blind Beggar and would highly recommend it to anyone. Our quiet drink after work turned into a full-blown drinks fest!
Really friendly bar staff make you feel at home and pub cats sleeping by the fire add a very nice touch.
