Epsom’s only real club offers students cheap midweek frolics, and at weekends wannabe WAGs an attempt at high-style magazine glitz.

The Venue
Boogie Lounge is easy to overlook in the daytime, but at night it’s unmissable, taking pride of place in the heart of Epsom. Look out for a large queue and scattered remains of burgers from the take away next door, and you’ll find it. Inside, the venue is decorated in burgundy and black. It’s a little bit retro, and ‘classy’ in a footballer’s wives/plastic chandeliers kind of way.

The club is split into two halves by an outside staircase, which allows organisers to host two separate nights if they need to, or hire out one half of the club to private guests whilst the other section remains public. There is space downstairs for 150 people, a small dancefloor and about 30 diners in a lounge style seating area (though the venue only serves food occasionally).

The main club is upstairs, decorated in the same burgundy and black, with room for over 170 people. There is also a separate, glass-walled VIP area which can be hired out for up to 15 people although, frankly, the only VIPs you’ll find here will be pretentious teenagers.

The Atmosphere
Boogie Lounge can get a bit uptight at weekends when the over 25’s door policy and shirts and shoes dress code are vehemently enforced. The club feels safe though and the four bouncers keep trouble to a minimum, which isn’t too difficult considering channel 4 voted Epsom England’s safest place to live in 2003.

Things are completely different on Friday and Saturday nights compared to the rest of the week when the dancefloor is filled by a much younger clientele of local art students, dancers and sixth formers - all over 18, of course! The dress code is completely withdrawn Monday to Wednesday too, and you’re more likely to find Converse All Stars and studded belts, than lace up shoes.

The Music
Monday to Wednesday Boogie Lounge opens its doors to local cool kids and art school students for cheap drinks and surprisingly big name DJs. Thanks to an excellent promotions team, Pendulum, Oxide and Nutrino, and DJ Yoda will all play here during winter 07/08. Not bad for a 170 capacity venue in a zone 6 commuter town!

The venue puts the age limit up to over-25s only at weekends (along with the prices). Expect commercial house and electro on Friday and 70’s and 80’s without the cheese on Saturday.

The Drink
The bar at Boogie Lounge serves an good selection of wines, spirits, shooters, shorts and cocktails, covering everything from basics like Kirs and belinis to more ambitious innovations such as mojitos. Expect to pay high prices (this is the only decent late night bar in town, after all) for anything other than larger at weekends.

The Last Word
Boogie Lounge is by no means competition for Central London nightclubs, but it is the best place to go out after 11pm in Epsom. Thanks to a new promoter and an increasing number of people living in freshly built flats nearby, the club is definitely getting better, hosting more popular DJs and drawing bigger crowds. Definitely a place to drop by, if you’re in the area.
