When I was last in Australia, I noticed a peculiar trend in the Perth bar industry. Namely, the huge number of drinking establishments with “hotel” in the title. In almost every case, the bars were massive. I’m talking places that could house the Western Australian Ute Convention and still have room for a couple of hundred drivers who prefer hatchbacks.
I never really got to the bottom of it, but I’m sure it’s all down to some sneaky licensing arrangement whereby the installation of 2 double bedrooms with en-suite facilities enables the establishment to stay open an extra couple of hours in the evening.
Anyway, when I was last in Hammersmith (an area noted for its Antipodean population) I happened upon the Brook Green Hotel. And low and behold, it appeared to be exactly the same deal. When I pushed open the door, I was greeted by the site of lots of bar and not a lot else.
However, a little research revealed that this “hotel” was the Real McCoy, so to speak. Upstairs, the barman revealed, were 14 bedrooms, air conditioned (gasp) and with en-suite facilities no less. Still, it had the air of a pub, and that’s what really matters.
The beer was from Youngs, and was as good as you would expect for beer drunk in London from a London brewery. The bar itself was rather grand – lengthy and well stocked, with nice big tables and plenty of space to spread out.
We spent a very pleasant evening there after escaping the horrors of the nearby Queen’s Head, which has already jumped to the top of my list of pubs suitable for drunken arson attacks. The Brook Green Hotel is a fine place to enjoy a few ales, and if you decide the journey home is too much to deal with, the rooms available are apparently comfortable and very reasonably priced!
