The ViewLondon Review
This classy cocktail bar on the ground floor of The Haymarket Hotel, sits alongside the restaurant of the same name.
The Venue
Dramatic red wallpapered walls and ceiling, with red banquettes and low red French Empire style chairs ensure a vibrant, dynamic meeting spot for a fashionable drinking crowd. Lit by candlelight (and low lighting) the room is definitely evocative and warm. It's hard not to feel jazzed by all the red. Brumus feels like an energetic spot to start a big evening out.
The Atmosphere
The lighting in Brumus is too dim to get a good look at who is actually here. Upon squinting, it seems very middle-aged and middle class. The cocktails are not cheap, so it attracts a crowd who don't mind splashing out more than ten quid on one cocktail. The service is a touch slow, but has a youthful charm. Despite all the traffic of Haymarket Street outside, you don't hear any of the noise; a jazzy soundtrack and polite conversation are both muffled by all the soft furnishings.
The Drink
An extensive cocktail list at Brumus, including a cocktail of the day, offers mouthwatering options, but at £10.50 a pop it isn't cheap. There are plenty of wine options abound, but again there are only a few bottles at under £30. The spirits list is practically encyclopaedic with more different types of vodka than you likely knew existed.
The Last Word
For sheer style and panache, Brumus has it in spades - but you might need a royal flush to afford more than just one drink here.
