The ViewLondon Review
The Bull and Last is an example of why North London pubs are some of the best in the capital. Close to Hampstead Heath, you can even go for a walk with your dog and take him for a quick pint afterwards. Just don’t let him get drunk!
The Venue
The Bull and Last is already streets ahead of most pubs, given it’s located within a Grade II listed building. The exterior is far less grand than some pubs nearby with a traditional exterior with a modern bull sign. Inside, the heavy wooden bar is charmingly cluttered with a big bull’s head looking down on you – just don’t wave a red flag and you should be okay. His bull mates can be found with their heads protruding out of the walls all around the space. Seating comes courtesy of simple dark wooden tables and chairs without too much in the way of unnecessary flounce and pretension. The only overt glamour comes courtesy of a chandelier-style light fitting.
The Atmosphere
The Bull and Last has an upbeat atmosphere of a thriving pub that’s comfortable in its own skin. Attracting a lot of locals – many of whom are clearly regulars – there’s a pleasant, banter-filled ambience, perpetuated by the friendly staff. However, if you’re a first timer you’re made to feel equally welcome and you won’t be overlooked at the bar in favour of their best mate.
The Food
The Bull and Last offers quality food at fairly pricey but not extortionate prices. From trotters for starters to ox cheek and chestnut mushroom pie and cote de boeuf for a main course, the menu has clearly been lovingly constructed with most dishes priced under £20. They also have bar snacks that include delicious crisp triple cooked chips with a light, fluffy middle. If you’re more adventurous then options include trotters or a mutton pasty.
TheDrink
An impressive draught choice at the Bull and Last which includes Kirin Ichiban, Leffe, Staropramen, Red Stripe, Orangeboom, Guinness, Addlestones, Black Sheep, Amstel, Becks Vier, Deuchers IPA, Sharp's Doombar and Mad Goose, which is bolstered by bottles like Westons organic cider, Duvel and Cusquena. If the grain isn’t your choice of tipple then there’s a strong choice of red, white and rose wine well priced from just £15 a bottle, with additional dessert wines and port as well as a good choice of bin ends.
The Last Word
The Bull and Last is a great all-round pub that balances modern British pub food with a total lack of pretension and excellent selection of draught beer.
