The Bunch of Grapes is all about the atmosphere, with a dependable and friendly crowd that keeps chattering as the lager flows.

The Venue
Just minutes away from London Bridge, the Bunch of Grapes’ old fashioned sign stands out against the concrete and luminous newsagent signs of Borough High Street. The pub itself is seemingly small, with a simple bar on one side of the room and a few high tables and stools. The decor consists of floor-to-ceiling sleek dark wood, which still holds a touch of unpolished authenticity to it meaning this place avoids looking like just another generic modern bar. Instead, it offers a contemporary amalgamation of old and new.

Bottles of spirits and wines are tidily displayed behind the bar, whilst the seemingly random placing of high tables and stools leave plenty of room for punters to relax in. The only brightness in the room comes from antique lights, plus a faint glow from outside. If you follow this glow you’ll stumble upon a beer garden, which for an otherwise busy area of London can seem like a haven. The exposed brick, scattering of plants and contrastingly chic gilded mirror create a unique area for great summer days, and offers a nice area for smokers.

The Atmosphere
The buzz of the Bunch of Grapes hits you as soon as you walk in. With an array of suits and jeans feeling comfortable here, the lively chatter makes the pub a fun place to drink. The friendly bar staff only add to the experience, making you feel at ease after a long day. Groups of friends crowd round the high tables with an endless stream of pint glasses, whilst couples sit in the corner enjoying more intimate chats. The ambience is infectious and the amiable mood will leave you smiling. From the afternoon onwards, there is a steady influx of everyone from City workers to bar flies and students, creating a pleasing mix of people.

The Drink
Even though the bar is small, the service tends to be speedy. All the regular favourites are on tap, such as Strongbow and Becks, plus there’s a decent selection of bottled beer. The price comes in at £3-£4 a pint, which is pretty average for the area. There is a good choice of wine for a pub, with prices varying from £12-£24 a bottle.

The Last Word
For a drink with friends who will appreciate the lack of old man pub atmosphere, the Bunch of Grapes is ideal.
