The ViewLondon Review
Deep in the heart of Covent Garden is a unique bar that comes complete with its own in-house brewery. With a range of cocktails and home-made lager, Bunker Bier Hall offers something a little different. The VenueBunker Bier Hall can be found just off Long Acre, on Earlham Street, and fits in well with its trendy surroundings. Although it’s underground, it’s not like the other cramped and dark subterranean bars that pepper London. Instead it’s big, airy and light and you’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re below the streets of Covent Garden.
Bunker Bier Hall is unusual in that it strikes the right balance between a pub, specialising in beers, and a cocktail bar. The decor is undeniably funky and nothing like the many olde day pubs of the surrounding locale. There are plenty of comfortable seating areas and booths available in all their leather glory and the bar stands out as a cool cocktail bar and is large enough to happily accommodate a busy night. However, what stands it apart from the rest is the micro-brewery that sits behind panes of glass and gleam in large brass tanks. They’re visually appealing and it’s good to know that you’re about to drink beer that’s not pumped full of preservatives for transportation.
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere here is chilled out and cool. A variety of people make up the clientele, as you might expect from cosmopolitan Covent Garden. Trendy media types pop in for post-work drinks, tourists are drawn in off nearby Long Acre and beer-lovers travel to try the homemade beer. The bar is unhurried, which can be frustrating if you’re in line waiting for a drink, but at least you’re not crammed in at a heaving bar. Although it can get busy at peak times – especially post-work on a Friday – there’s more than enough room to accommodate everyone in the vacuous room.
The FoodThe food at Bunker Bier Hall is pretty standard bar fare. Wedges, chips and platters to share are all reasonable for the area and are good quality. Randomly, they serve a really expensive burger and chips, but the other main courses, which include steak, fish and pretty much anything you’d expect from pub grub, are all well-priced mains.
The DrinkThe drinks at Bunker Bier Hall are where the bar really earns its good rating. They produce their own Freedom beer, which at around £3.50 a pint is excellent value for money. No chemicals or preservatives are added as with other lagers and the result is a fragrant, clean taste. For non beer drinkers, there’s a good range of cocktails that are well made, if rather pricey. However, regular happy hours help to keep customers happy.
The Last WordThis bar is truly unique. It has a broad appeal – great for cocktail lovers and beer connoisseurs alike.
