The ViewLondon Review
A funky little pub with a global menu and an interesting past.
The Venue
This little pub with an almost 360 degree view of Camden is located in the heart of Camden Town. It’s over 200 years old and has a rather dark and grisly past as a halfway house for criminals who managed to avoid the hangman’s noose.
Situated just across the road from Camden Town tube station, a five minute walk from Mornington Crescent, it has a fantastic location. Inside, the bar is something of a centrepiece, with several chandelier-style lights overhanging it. Leather sofas and armchairs offer an almost living room feel to the furnishings, helped by the presence of granny lamps and books lining the windowsills. The Camden Eye also features a first floor function room for parties or corporate events.
The Atmosphere
The Camden Eye is always busy which is great for a lively atmosphere but can also mean a lengthy waiting time at the small bar. It can fall prey to hoards of tourists due to its proximity to the tube station, but on week nights you will find it filled with diverse and genuine Camdenites. Live music and film nights ensure it’s popular with locals.
The Food
The food served in The Camden Eye is from all over the world and includes flavours from France, Italy and even Sweden. The service is fast and efficient and the staff are happy to help. Prices come in at £6-£9 and include your standard selection of sandwiches, salads and burgers, although the chicken burger (£9) is pepped up by Reggae Reggae sauce, made famous by Dragon’s Den.
The Drink
The Camden Eye has a great selection of wine and you can pick up a bottle starting from just £13. They serve Champagne by the glass and bottle, real ale and are Cask Marque accredited.
The Last Word
Real ale, friendly staff, well priced food and a great location make this a worthwhile stop off in Camden. Not bad for a pub competing with so many strong neighbours.
