The ViewLondon Review
You’re off to the Emirates and you fancy a few pints before the game. Now is the time to head to members’ bar Cannons The Factory; it’s sure to get you in the mood for footie as it’s bursting with Gunners character.
The Venue
Cannons the Factory is quite difficult to spot as there is little in the way of signage to belie its location save a large red Budweiser banner draped above the entrance. If you’re really stuck then it’s located directly opposite the Gunners pub. Before entering, you’ll need to put pen to paper and sign the guest book. Pushing through the doors you will find a cosy, narrow room with a bar at the end. Projected onto the white wall is the football or whatever other big sporting event they’re showing.
Cannons The Factory has gained its name from its previous incarnation as a dress makers. The decor is, of course, red and white symbolising the Arsenal team colours. The wooden floors prove handy for when punters get so into the game they spill their drinks. You’ll spy Arsenal paraphernalia hanging from the walls, including a picture of the old stadium. There is purposely little in the way of seating as it means more people can fit in to watch sport or catch up with friends.
The Atmosphere
On match days, you’ll find that most punters have popped in here to have a few pints with people they know. This is a very locals-orientated place and everyone pretty much knows everyone else. The staff greet newcomers and regulars alike warmly and have a great attitude; whether they’ve known you for 5 minutes or 5 years, they treat you with the same grace. It’s easy to see why Cannons the Factory is respected by the local community.
The laid back demeanor of the bar makes you feel instantly comfortable and relaxed. Surprisingly, it doesn’t get that rowdy even during the big matches, and you’ll find that this is a place for fans just wanting to watch all things sport – and Arsenal. During the week, it’s open until 11pm but if needs be for parties or big events it has a 24-hour license, which comes in handy.
The Drink
The booze on offer at Cannons the Factory is very basic but it does the job. Pints are priced at just £3 for such choices as Guinness, Fosters, Stella, Strongbow, Carlsberg, IPA and Budweiser. Bottles include Budweiser, Stella, Becks, Holsten Pils, Budvar, Corona, Bulmers and Magners. The harder stuff is also available and you can expect to pay £3 for a spirit mixer, which is great in times of credit crunch doom and gloom.
The Last Word
Cannons the Factory is an excellent place for Arsenal fans to mingle and watch sport together. The staff make you feel incredibly welcome and you could easily sit here all day swigging beers whilst listening to stories from the locals of the area. Well worth a visit if you’re a Gunners fan.
