The ViewLondon Review
Ahoy matey! The Captain summons you around to his cabin for a spot of drinking and dining in Central London.
The Venue
Located on a side street off busy Haymarket Street, The Captains Cabin occupies the spot where a former 18th century coaching house called The Cock Tavern used to stand. The Captains Cabin has been spruced up, but still retains the warmth of a classic pub. There are brass chandeliers and hurricane lanterns over the main bar. Rich colours, patterned wallpaper and a mixture of hardwood, carpets and stone on the floor are visually appealing and delineate different areas. The low-ish ceiling helps keep the sound levels down. There is an upstairs that is particularly cosy and can be hired out. Kudos also to this pub for having immaculately clean toilets.
The Atmosphere
The crowd here is quite mixed in age and demographic – expect to see everyone from young guys to suits and pensioners. It's a bit tucked away, so you’re not likely to just stumble across it - the patrons are here by choice, which creates a friendly local atmosphere often missing in Central London pubs.
The Food
There is a fairly bog standard pub menu at the Captains Cabin. There is nothing to rock your world in a culinary way, but fiscally speaking you could have lunch for under a fiver and dinner for under a tenner. There aren't a lot places you can consistently do that in the West End.
The Drink
The Captain has a well stocked pump-house with a range of lagers and ales on tap. They have a changing guest ale alongside regulars ales such as Bombardier and Directors. They have a good wine list with plenty of choice - the majority of which come in at under £15 a bottle. All can be sampled by the glass.
The Last Word
As winter sets in, the Captains Cabin is a cosy place to take refuge from the storm.
