While on our first trip from the USA to London, my companion and I happen upon this pub while heading back to the tube (subway). We were promptly greeted by Taigo, our server who asked if we wished to eat, or just have an ale. We decided to try both. Our waiter gave us a menu, then informed us that certain meals were lower priced before 5 pm. We chose the traditional Bangers & Mash. Tiago was kind enough to draw up a sample of the draft ales, and I went with Old Speckled Hen because it was recommended by our tour guide. Our meal was hot, generous and tasty. My companion, who prefers her cuisine more on the healthy side, chose a pasta & chicken dish on a later visit which she said was fantastic. While on our visit we tried a couple of other pubs, whose food was good, but the service was severely lacking.

Rude staff, bad food – don’t bother going to this pub. – avoid

My office have been frequenting the captain’s cabin for years (its the closets pub to us). We go every Friday and spend a lot of money there. However never again! We have a huge work force as well – but they will receive no more money from us!

The staff are just awful – when you ask for a beer – all you get is a humph and a sad face – like its so inconvenient you are making them do their job – which is just what you need at the end of the day when you want to relax. And that’s when you’re lucky enough to even get their attention as they are always understaffed. I mean who manages a pub like this!

As I say - we have been going to this pub for years and the staff that have been there the whole time have not bothered getting to know us – nor have they ever shown any gratitude for our custom –they just want your money for as little effort as possible

The staff often appear angry at each other which rubs off on the customers. They mope around collecting glasses, snapping at people and not helping each other - However I’m not surprised – the manager is a really creepy man who sits at the bar and looking down on everyone. He is not a good inviting host – I am not sure why he is there at all – is he just watching the staffs every move and being rude to the customers.

I feel they are just so stupid– to think of the amount of money they could make. The actual building is nice and the location perfect – they just have a bunch of amazingly stupid idiots running it. the food is so bad its vacant at lunch times even though its surrounded by offices and in the evening after everyone has had their first pint - they leave. Whereas other pubs around it with nicer managers and staff are absolutely buzzing. Shame on them!

Don’t bother going in. This is just a horrible soulless pub.

My Husband and I and our two children popped in for a quick pub lunch in what we thought looked like a really nice little pub. It was earlier in the day - so not the after work drinking crowd as yet. Before I had even got back to the table with our drinks the Manager had already sent a bar staff member over to ask my husband to control our children. We had literally just walked in. We were at the back of the room with no one around us (a seat we chose due to the fact that we were away from other patrons)...oh and the kids were sitting down! Not only was the Manager not professional enough to come talk to my Husband him/her self (never did get to meet them), but the food we ordered was also pretty sub standard. After attempting to shrug off extreamly rude behaviour we were left extremly unsatisfied by our meal. We had in the weeks previous to this meal eaten all over the world and never once in the dozens of places we went had we been so offended. They serve a childrens menu so they must have had kids in there before...

This is not actually a review, more of a re view after an absence of 40 years plus. During my career, at sea, I used to use the, now defunct, 'dive bar' as a meeting point for all my shipmates who happened to be ashore, either studying or home on leave at the time. I believe it was then owned by Knowland Bros but stand to be corrected. I have many, happy memories of this establishment, some mentionable, some not. George ran the snack bar on the ground floor and to recount just one incident, I remember him telling me he had just served an 'underage' female, who I might have heard of, by the name of Lulu. May well come back, to add more anecdotes, should I not be 'barred' from so doing. Gtp (graham 'the pipe' Smith)

Further to my above 'introduction' I will now explain how I came to return to an 'old haunt'. Captain John Woodend, a colleague from our, sadly demised, shipping line, Elder Dempster Lines of Liverpool, was in the UK for a flying visit. We had arranged to meet for a few jars and some reminiscing about the 'good old days'. Having met, we decided to investigate whether this aptly named venue was still in existence. Happily this proved affirmative and 'a few hours, pints and social chats with the inmates and staff' passed very pleasantly. The necessary 'blotting paper' went down well and a fellow diner kindly photographed two old salts sitting in their 'cabin'.

John is now back in South Africa, his adopted homeland and yours faithfully back in Surrey. We both agreed that we would not leave it another forty years before revisiting, as we are both over the 'legal speed limit' and whilst the venue may well, then, still exist, 'us two' will have - to use a nautical expression - have 'crossed the bar' - and NOT the one you are thinking.

Summary and conclusion: We both swallowed our 'Pride' (London) and enjoyed our meal (the aforementioned 'blotting paper'.) Should you, personally, have no nautical background BUT happen to be an Antipodean, you too will enjoy being served, with a smile, by your fellow countrymen and ladies!

We've always booked the upstairs area for our social group gatherings.
Or the past 3 years I haven't experienced poor service or impoliteness there yet.

I think the drinks are reasonalbly priced in comparison to other places in the area. I don't buy food there so can't comment on that.

The staff can be a bit slow on general common sense when it comes to turning on the air conditioning or opening windows when it's hot, but they are friendly and up for a short chat if they're not too busy pouring.

It's no longer a smokey, dingy place and I find it quite pleasant there. It's not a flash place but it is good for regular and frequent gatherings.

Also, they are refurbishing shortly so I'm sure things will improve decor wise.

I wouldn't recommend this pub for anybody. The manager is rude and shouts at customers. When you finish your drink, straight away you must leave the place otherwise he will be agressive. Never mind your friends are still drinking, you don't so you leave... Staff forgets about food orders and almost never brings cutlery or napknis.

I agree with last reviewer's comments, but can't see why Aussie bar staff would be a plus at the Captains Cabin. They don't even know what a pint of bitter is or even a shot of rum.
