The ViewLondon Review
A Shoreditch cocktail haven for those in the know, Casita is small but perfectly formed.
The Venue
Hidden away behind an unassuming oak door on tiny Ravey Street (just of Great Eastern Street), Casita is hardly the most prominent watering hole in east London – this is a good thing. The minimalist bar sign hanging outside is the only hint that this is a public venue at all. Even some of the regulars at The Griffin (directly opposite) could be forgiven for never having noticed the place. But for those who are aware of its presence, Casita offers one of the most relaxed and friendly drinking atmospheres anywhere in the East End.
Inside, Casita is tiny. It's made up of one small room with a bar, seating for about eight, and standing room for another ten at a serious push: large group party venue, this ain’t. What it lacks in size however, it makes up for in charisma. The bar is owned, run and staffed by one man, and this personal touch shows. It oozes character, and the walls are festooned with polaroids of revellers past. Casita is nominally Mexican (or at least South American) themed, and indeed there is a slight favela feel to the place – incongruous décor, distressed furniture and a slightly haphazard feel to the bar, however what you really notice is the intimacy and effortlessness of the place.
The Atmosphere
The owner/occupier dynamic really carries through to the atmosphere of the place. Apparently Casita is inspired by small bars in Spain, where the idea is not heavy drinking, rather to unwind in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and escape from the heat and bustle of the city streets. This concept has been carried off as authentically as can possibly be done in the heart of Shoreditch. It is a very cool hangout, and you are at close quarters with the other patrons and the bartender, which makes it incredibly easy to strike up conversation with those around you. Before you know it everyone is buying each other drinks, divulging tall tales, and generally getting along swimmingly.
The Drink
Deriding pomp and frivolity, the drinks on offer are unassuming but fresh, well balanced and - if it is what you are after - can pack a serious punch. The classic daiquiri is one of the best in town, and the mojito packed a real punch. All the cocktails are made right under your nose from top quality ingredients, fresh fruit and some spirits you will almost certainly never have heard of. Prices have been seen to vary from night to night, which is a bit disconcerting, but they are very generous with their measures – there are certainly no digitally accurate optics behind the bar - and you shouldn't pay more than about £7-£8 for a cocktail. If you really make a good impression legend tells that late night free shots are often served to loyal and interesting customers, but be warned if that is your motivation for going, you almost certainly will not be invited to partake.
The Last Word
The combination of friendly atmosphere and excellent drinks make this minute bar one of London’s finest, and a very well-kept secret. If you go once and enjoy it, you will almost certainly become a regular.
