The ViewLondon Review
The Cat and Canary is a well executed Average Joe’s pub set in the heart of Canary Wharf.
The Venue
The Cat and Canary is a Fullers pub on Fisherman's Wharf. It has a large outdoor terrace overlooking the water from which you can see the sunset and watch the pink light dance on the water of the dock.
Inside, it is a clean and orderly pub and restaurant, decently large, with room to move around and get to the bar. Surprisingly, there are a large number of VLT machines along one wall - obviously gambling on the stock market all day isn't enough of a gamble for their Canary Wharf customers.
The Atmosphere
The atmosphere at Cat and Canary is overwhelmingly comfortable and relaxed with a largely male clientele. Expect scenes of long haired, middle-aged biker types chatting with guys in chinos and administrative assistants in flats. On the whole, as is to be expected in Canary Wharf, you’ll mostly spy a sea of white, blue, and white-and-blue-striped dress shirts.
The Food
Daily specials include pork with apple and blue cheese sauce, which sits comfortably beside your usual pub grub of burgers, jacket potatoes, baguettes and fish and chips - any of which can be yours for under a tenner.
The Drink
Cat and Canary offers Fruli Strawberry Beer on tap, a Belgian white fruit beer similar to Ribena - cloyingly sweet yet strangely moreish. More traditional tastes are met with Peroni, Kronenbourg, Carling, Guinness, Strongbow, Grolsch and Honey Dew Ale. Or try Pale Gold from Ossett Brewery in Yorkshire. There are plenty of stomped grape options for the wine lover, all of which can be sampled for under a fiver. For those who don't drink alcohol, they offer Pepsi Raw, made from naturally sourced ingredients.
The Last Word
Canary Wharf isn’t as tightly wound as the City. There isn’t so much in-your-face testosterone on display, which means that you can enjoy a drink at The Cat and Canary without worrying about being surrounded by banker-wankers. People are chilled and enjoy a pleasant evening out without the high-fiving and the bottles of Krug. If the weather is warm, grab a table outside to watch the changing play of light.
