The ViewLondon Review
Charlestons is the only pub in the Market Place and, unfortunately, it’s not much good unless you’re just popping in for a quick one after work. The VenueCharlstons is a small venue, although it’s never heaving with punters so that’s not really a problem. From the outside, it’s very easy to drive past without noticing as the bathroom store and the carpet shop grab your attention and look far more interesting (and that’s saying something). The windows are covered with blinds (so you can’t see what you’re about to let yourself in for) and the rickety old chair and table outside don’t do much to impress, either.
As you enter, you’ll notice a bar to your left with a plasma screen above usually tuned into The Hits when the football’s not on. A few bar stools keep the bar company whilst those in the mood for some TV can sit at one of the handful of tables. Up a couple of steps towards the back of the venue is a pool table, juke box and quiz machine. Unfortunately, there’s no beer garden so if you fancy a smoke then you’ll have to step out the front door to get your kicks.
The AtmosphereAnyone that says they’re on their way to Charlstons certainly won’t pick the pub for its lively atmosphere. It’s usually empty and that naturally has an impact on the general feeling within. That said, the staff are friendly and nine times out of ten the pool table is free, which is always good - there’s nothing worse than having to wait hours on end for a game of pool. Occasionally, when Arsenal are playing, the bar fills ever so slightly as a few of the locals pop in to support their team. Otherwise, unless you’re looking for a very quiet drink and you can’t get to another pub, Charlestons Bar is for you.
The DrinkThe selection is very disappointing at Charlstons - they only have two taps on which you’ll find either Fosters (£2.50) or Budvar, and unfortunately the range of bottled beers doesn’t make up for this (Becks, Budweiser, Grolsch, San Miguel and Bulmers just about covers it). A pint of Guinness (£2.40) will come out of a can of draught, which just isn’t the same, and a glass of red or white wine comes in at £2.40. All in all, if you’re looking for a decent selection of beer, this pub is definitely not for you.
The Last WordCharlstons is missing the point with its poor selection of beer and lame atmosphere. Its one saving grace is that it has a pool table, which is usually free, and they occasionally show the football, but unless you like bottled lager you’ll only come away disappointed.
