Extremely disappointing, just shy of 300 pound for a four person lunch. The food tasted good however, steaks over cooked, starter cold, coffee barely warm, “Jacobs” crackers with poor selection of cheese and..... poor service. The later I’ll elaborate on in a little more detail. We complained about the cold Champignons Farcais to which were awfully cold, only to wait another 20 minutes for another mildly warm set, The fillet came out medium when we asked for rare, they apologised, disappeared for 2 mins and came out with the same steak! coffee was cold but by this time, it wasn’t worth complaining. The bill had the mushrooms on despite them saying they would be removed for our inconvenience. I’m sure this isn’t a true reflection of Chez Gerard however I’ll think twice before going back.
Visited Chez Gerard in charlotte street for my son's 21st birthday. Food and service was abismal. We ordered from the a la carte menu and I can honestly say was one of the worst meals I have had, mussels were served in what I can only describe as grey dishwater. steaks were uninspiring as was the so called honey roasted carrots & parsnips which arrived straight from the microwave with no honey or having seen a roasting tin. Also the scallop starter arrived stone cold only to be brought back microwaved when we complained. The waiting staff would only shrug their shoulders when we complained that we had the steaks but no sauce to which they replied kitchen is very busy, but we ordered steaks with sauce, not for the sauce to arrive half way through us eating them. At £40 a head for two courses with half a bottle of wine each I expected more. A place I would not visit again or recommend.
We were a pre-booked party of about 15 people who had the prix fixe menu. Service was abysmal and we waited 65 minutes for our starters. Mine was the goat's cheese salad which was ordinary with very little cheese. My main course was the cod which was lukewarm, tough and uninspiring. The staff attitude was dismissive and evasive. My advice would be to avoid the prix fixe menu, or going in a large party, or both. Hugely disappointing.
Ooh la la! Chez Gerard serve truly one of the best steak and frites this side of Paris. It's calm, romantic, and very friendly ambience goes well with the excellent brasserie style food.
I have been to Chez Gerard many times and will come back for sure. It is a wonderful little French bistro.
I like Chez Gerard for its Anglo-French cuisine, light and airy atmosphere and decent service. However, if any of my friends came to visit me from Paris, I wouldn't be taking them to Chez Gerard as it's not that authentic!
