The cittie is lovely in terms of atmosphere. Sam Smith's is a 'marmite' brewery (you love or hate it) however most people enjoy their bottled organic beers, and the price is reasonable. Their food isn't worth going specially for- sandwiches etc' are OK, but the rest is deep-fried standard stuff.
Mind you, the victorian panelled interior does make it an interesting venue with character and a good talking point. I'd definitely (as I have in the past) consider this for after-work beers.

I had previously enjoyed a trip to Cittie of Yorke but my last visit was a serious let-down. The service was very slow and the beer kept running out. The staff appeared very inexperienced and unable to cope with a moderately busy evening.

The food at Cittie of York is a definite no-go area. It was poor quality, compounded by staff doggedly arguing the toss over a minor complaint regarding our meal.

Cittie of York is a nice traditional pub with a great interior. Sam Smith's prices which are always nice. One thing to note is that Cittie of York does not have the longest bar in Britain, not even close. Not sure where that information came from.

Loads of bars claim that accolade - the last one (bar the Cittie) that I saw was in Gt Yarmouth - and the bar WAS longer! The Cittie has a longish but not gigantic bar.
