The ViewLondon Review
Serving the best cocktails in Canary Wharf, the innovative City Bunker is so much more than just a bar – it’s an entertainment venue. The VenueCity Bunker is located inside a listed Victorian building, but don’t think it's anything other than ultra-modern. Inside is an airy, beautifully presented bar. The walls are painted with light forestry, which immediately makes you feel far removed from the rat-race. The space is open plan and huge. There is a nice seating area in the centre of the room, reminiscent of a living room with comfy sofas and nice tables. But it’s the big screens that really catch the eye. Around the outside of the room are five huge projector screens, offering entertainment not seen anywhere else in the Wharf. In one corner is a choice of game consoles, including the Wii, Xbox and Playstation 3, where you can play games such as baseball or tennis. Then there are the golf simulators where people who don’t wish to trek to the nearest golf course can practise their swing. And if that’s not enough, there are two large TVs behind the bar showing the football, rugby or any other big sporting event that’s on. But the real bonus to City Bunker is the fantastic bar. It wouldn’t look out of place in one of the glamorous, upmarket venues of Central London.
The AtmosphereCanary Wharf is often thought of as being a sterile place. However, City Bunker cannot be accused of this and is a friendly, upbeat bar. The delighted whoops emitted from grown adults playing in glee on the Wii echo across the bar, and everyone seems entertained and content. Even if games and golf aren’t your thing, the sound system plays decent music and the general feel of the bar can be enjoyed even when just propping up the bar.
However, it is the staff who really make the atmosphere what is it. Unlike many other bars in the area, the staff here are friendly, cheerful and eager to please. They’ll happily talk you through the cocktail menu and recommend drinks you should try. They seem content in their work and this comes through to the customers who, tired of the usual stoic attitudes, are only too happy to interact and enjoy the feel-good atmosphere.
The DrinkThe drinks are where this bar really excels. The bar is stocked with a wide range of beers and bottles and, most impressively, a huge selection of spirits – from the usual to unusual, including a range of premium spirits. The cocktails served here are, without a doubt, the best cocktails in Canary Wharf. Mixed by an expert staff and covering a huge selection at reasonable prices, this is a good bar by anyone’s standards.
The Last WordCity Bunker is an innovative entertainment bar with a golf twist, but don’t be put off if you don’t enjoy golf – this is an excellent venue whatever your interest and is definitely worth a visit, even if you don’t live or work in the area.
