The ViewLondon Review
A sturdy, attractive pub near Green Park Tube with an affordable offering of food and drink.
The Venue
The Clarence is a comfortable pub that has been tenderly restored with plenty of dark wood on display. Lit with candles and low chandeliers it has a hospitable feeling. There are comfortable armchairs, wooden tables and chairs, and stools to perch around the perimeter. Smokers are even catered for with an outside heating lamp to keep them warm while they puff.
The Atmosphere
The Clarence has a very diverse crowd with patrons aged between 20 and death. Service is efficient, although they appear to be a bit short-staffed as dirty glasses sometimes remain uncleared throughout the venue.
The Food
A changing seasonal menu gives you lots of different ways to fill your hunger void. You can choose between five different types of fish for the classic pub dinner of fish and chips. Food is available throughout the day and includes a very reasonable full English breakfast. Upstairs, there is a separate dining room with a full menu.
The Drink
The Clarence has a good selection of cask ales including Adnams Broadside, Thwaites Nutty Black, and Timothy Taylor Landlord. Draught lagers include Peroni, Staropramen, and Kronenburg. Changing seasonal wines and a decent selection of whiskies give plenty of choice at reasonable prices.
The Last Word
The Clarence is warm and hospitable - a well-executed, traditional pub.
