The ViewLondon Review
Pubs don’t need gastro labels, cosy armchairs and wooden floorboards to keep the punters flocking in, and the Coborn Arms is proof enough.
The Venue
Located at the end of Coborn Road, the pub with the same name is a sight to be devoured on a warm summer’s day. On the residential street, its patio breaks up the pavement and umbrellas shelter tables on the quiet forecourt. The white facade beams the light of the sun onto drinkers’ backs and the gold brass lettering of the sign sparkles.
Inside, the place is styled with a traditional pub look and everything is clean and angular. Although the tables and chairs and the flowery carpet are hardly cutting edge design, their freshness at least makes the pub homely and inviting. It can feel a little dark during the day so it’s best to grab one of the picnic tables outside and head in when the sun sets.
The Atmosphere
The Coborn Arms does well with friendly groups devoid of judgemental glances. A thirtysomething crowd makes up the majority of the clientele but this is by no means an exclusive demographic. Being as it is in a residential area, things are calm and quiet for the most part but it fills up at weekends.
The Food
The menu is only available when the kitchen is open so at times you’ll need to settle for crisps and nuts from the bar. The usual staples of pub food are served with staple chips and portions are hearty.
The Drink
The Coborn Arms is predominantly a drinker’s pub and as a part of the Youngs brewery there is a set of their ales on the taps with a few guest bitters. Among the lagers on draught there is Fosters and Kronenbourg and there’s a small selection of wine, priced with the suburban location in mind.
The Last Word
The Coborn Arms has a simple set up without gimmicks and is a pleasant spot for a pint.
