The ViewLondon Review
Looking as if it has just landed on Old Street from a Moroccan back alley, Cocomo offers the unusual, and mostly enjoyable, combination of scruffy Eastern chic and killer cocktails. The VenueInside Cocomo, the operative word is cosy – perfect when it’s quiet, too small when it’s busy. The decor is an explosion of Eastern cliches – in the same vein as The Hookah Lounge and Casa Blue on Brick Lane – right down to the tree trunk tables (watch out for sliding drinks) and oversized cushions.
The AtmosphereAll this lends itself beautifully to intimate evenings in the corner, although any more than twenty customers upstairs and you might wish to explore underground in search of more suitably private surroundings. Indeed, loud city suits are to be glared at. There are too many Nathan Barley bars in this square mile that would be more than happy to take them; Cocomo is no such venue.
The DrinkPrices are particularly reasonable at Cocomo, the selection is varied and the attentive barstaff’s mixing very successful. As if that wasn’t enough, there is a wide selection of beers on offer if you can’t be bothered to wait for the ice crushing and leaf pounding work required for your mojito.
The Last WordIf it’s packed with bad haircuts, Cocomo can be something of a comfy warzone; however, this is no grounds for criticism – merely a firm warning. Given the small space and huge competition, Cocomo is deservedly successful. Just don’t all pile in there at once.
