It is a pity there are not more current reviews on here and I do hope that people haven't been put off by the outdated ones here. Well worth a look! New manager, new staff, new chef, new menu and as of this week a new pub after a successful refurbishment.
Much better than the over priced/no atmosphere Pheonix!

Oops. My review below should have been one star (no stars not an option unfortunately).

Simply awful. Food, staff, ambience all stunningly awful. How did it all go so wrong with the big corporate chains ruining this industry?

"Restaurant"! "Restaurant!??" You must be joking. A chain pub serving what can be barely described as edible freezer to deep fryer to plate rubbish at exhorbitant prices. Don't be fooled .. its a corporate money grab. A bad pub run badly with mice running round the place when it's quieter. Check out the Phoenix round the corner on Palace Street for proper food.

Nice little boozer with a reasonable selection of ales/wines/spirits. Staff polite.
Food on the other peoples plates looked nice, but I must warn against the steak (which I thought would be a bomb-proof order) which was as tough as old boots (the menu having boasted that it had been aged for at least 28 days (28 weeks more like)) accompanied by buckshot peas and chips and a mushroom that had shared the deep fat fryer until they were introduced to my plate. That would have been OK except the oil had past its useful life some days/weeks earlier.
On balance, OK as a bolt-hole for post work sherbets (tucked away from the masses) but avoid anything that has to be fried.

Colonies Restaurant has got a great little bar. There is great gang of workers who are all really friendly. Colonies has decent food as well. You can get a meal for under a tenner.
