The ViewLondon Review
Gifted with a rather impressive dining room, Courtfield can be dressed up for dinner or dressed down for a pint. Wear what you like and take a seat where appropriate.
The Venue
An old-time pub located right in front of Earls Court tube, Courtfield is a nice venue split over two floors. The glamour is hidden upstairs in the dining room: imperial in colour (red, blue and white) and decoration, it looks pretty stunning with high ceilings and windows, heavy curtains, and baroque wallpaper. Furnished with red, high-backed chairs and square tables with impeccably white tablecloths, this is the type of restaurant where you hear glasses tinning and cutlery touching the plates: tres chic.
The ground floor is not as daunting: nice floral wallpaper covers part of the wall and pretty hanging lampshades deliver a last century charm, but for the rest, it’s furnished with typical pub chairs, tables and couches.
The Atmosphere
Depending on where you sit, the crowd changes considerably. The dining room is popular with older couples while the pub hosts a very mixed crowd of Earls Court locals and foreign exhibition visitors in suits. Courtfield has the gift of being busy quite often - even during the week - and the pub can be noisy, cramped and hard to navigate. Do not give up on it though: the service is very fast and the bar staff will get your drink to you in no time.
The Food
You would expect an expensive, elaborate menu given the attire of the dining room; however, it’s quite the contrary. Courtfield offers traditional pub food at decent prices: the mains are all between £6-£9 and starters are sharers are just as affordable at £4-£8. The City Sampler is particularly plentiful in taste and size: chicken wings, garlic bread, cocktail sausages, potato wedges, nachos and chips are enough to feed two for only £8.25. If you’re not that hungry, opt of a burger (£7-£8): the falafel burger will satisfy the veggies while the 6oz 35 -day matured British rump steak or the chicken breast will fill the meat eaters. Even lighter options are the sandwiches (£4-£5) including tasty fillings like steak and roasted red onion.
The Drink
The pub shines for its selection of ales: if you’re a fan you can get your fix here. Their wine menu is also very well done, divided into chapters highlighting the main characteristics of reds and white - each thoroughly described. For whites, the Gewurztraminer Dopff and Irion (Alsace) and the Trio Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Riesling (Chile) are particularly interesting. Prices are more than reasonable at £3.20-£4 for a small glass, £4.50-£5.50 for a large and £12-£15 for a bottle, and sparkling wine is just a tad pricier.
The Last Word
The dining room is definitely quite a bargain: upscale restaurant looks at pub prices. As such, it is the recommended part of Courtfield. The rest is good without being impressive.
